Advice for a quick cleanup of a neglected car

Hey, I'm looking for advice for a cleanup job I need to do and the problem is I don't have the time to invest in a really involved fix-up.

The car involved is not my Infiniti, but our Subaru Outback which is a dark brown. I know all the steps to a really involved detail, but I know I don't have the time to do that. I also don't feel like paying a professional.

So, my plan is this:
1) Do a really thorough washing of the car.
2) Do some middle step
3) Wax the car

So, my question is this:
What single paint clean-up step should I do between washing and waxing or is there actually a "cleaner/wax" that would do a reasonable job?

Thanks,
Eric
