Review: 22PLE VM1 wheel coating
Review: 22PLE VM1 wheel coating
I recently purchased a new set of wheels and decided to apply the 22PLE VM1 product to the unmounted wheels before having the tires mounted and wheels installed. I bought the smaller of the two bottle sizes (I forget the size at the moment) from Detailed Image. What I wanted was something to keep my wheels cleaner and make them easier to clean off road grime and especially brake dust (the product info states it withstands hot brake dust).
To keep this short(er) and sweet: this stuff works great. I rubbed it on my new, clean, wheels with a microfiber cloth, let it sit for a few minutes then wiped it off with another clean cloth. Honestly, I thought I wasted my money because it didn't look like it did anything or left anything behind to seal the wheel. The wheels didn't look any different (in my dining room where I applied the stuff).
After mounting, the wheels looked bright and clean. But they were new. The next day I washed my car (I HAD to clean it to take pics
). When I sprayed water on the wheels I noticed the water would instantly bead up and run off like a nicely waxed body panel would. When I wiped it with a wash cloth the wheels felt noticeably slippery and easy to clean, but they were new so I waited to form an opinion.
Here in Texas we've had a LOT of rain over the past few weeks and I've done more driving in water than I cared to. My car's bodywork looks like you would expect from that kind of weather. My wheels, however, were still shiny! After two weeks of wet roads and zero washing or care to them, I couldn't spot any brake dust or dirt at all until I bent down next to them and inspected them up close and personally. That's when I realized how well this stuff works because there are a few spots with "streaks" of brake dust/road grime in areas I obviously didn't coat thoroughly with the cloth. But 99.9% of the wheel looks fantastic. A finger wipe across the surface left only a faint dirt/dust mark on my finger and wasn't even noticeable on the wheel itself.
Now I'm waiting for a long dry spell of weather (we seem to be in one now, i hope) to see how it stands up to just dirt and dust with no water potentially interfering with keeping them clean. I have a feeling though I'm still going to be impressed. I'll report back to let you guys know how it works out.
