Is there something I'm missing here? I know it would easily take me about 8 hours for a multi-step polish (depending on the severity of the paint, of course. It could easily be more) Should I be working slower? My speed of movement is about 1" per second. Reason I ask is because I'm pretty much still a noob at this whole detailing thing.

Depends on what machine you're using, what polish, what pad, the paint, what condition its in, the weather, what speed, etc.
