Go with a PC. I had a budget one a few years that I will give you for free if you really want it. It has little power and no good pads to get swirl removal done well.

It's a good price, but then you have to add in the backing plate and pads.
The need for a warranty is up to you. I think PC has a good reliability history, but you never know with anything electronic. I bought a used PC saw that has never had a problem despite being abused by its former owner- very well built.

Yes, I do have one. I like it better than a PC. I never owned a PC, but used somebody else's. The UDM will still slightly bog down at low speeds with moderate/high pressure, but barely at all at high speeds. I'm still trying to decide which compound/polish I like best for it. So far its between Menzerna Intensive Polish and Optimum Compound. IP breaks down quicker, but OC seems like it does a slightly better job. I use the DAS pads that came out along with the UDM also. I felt a random orbital was necessary with a black G. After polishing it passes the 5 foot test, but not so much the bring a light right down on the paint. Oh well, such is the life of a daily driver!

 

Do you stop after the Intesive Polish or Optimum Compound? What you could be seeing is polishing haze. Especially on a black car, I would finish up with a finishing polish like Menzerna PO106FF or Optimum Polish.

 

There is definitely haze afterwards with the OC, not as much with the IP. I follow up my compounds with ZPC on a blue (finishing) pad.

 

The UDM has more power and torque. A little less vibration, but limited to a 5" counterweight, meaning the largest pad you can use would be a 6-6 1/2". They are supposed to release the 6" counterweight and replace existing customers' UDMs at no charge.

I also have a Festool RO150FEQ, dual mode RO/forced rotation polisher and love it. Much more power and rotary-like mode for even more correction ability. Pricey, but IMO well worth the price.
