Has anyone purchased winter tires for their G37 and plan to drive it in the winter. I live in Ottawa, and history certainly suggest I need em for Ottawa driving and therefore I am in the market for some winters. Any success stories, brands to buy, brands to avoid? I guess selection is limited since they need to fit with the big 14 inch brakes...

Lemme help you out: Alpin or Blizzaks!

 

I bought from TireRack, great price. You may have more trouble finding winter tires for the G37S.

 

Selection isn't as abundant with the sport brakes but definitely not hard to find. You probably won't be able to go 17" but alot of people have fit 18's over the sport brakes (myself included). Seriously though as rrrevin has previously said, this topic has been discussed ad nauseam, search in the wheel/tires forum and you should find lots of information.

 

I have searched the "American" wheels/tires forum but how much do they really know about Canadian winters...haha - I guess you could say I am looking for a Canadian perspective...

 

I have Blizzaks 18" (G37S). Dealer said 17" would not fit over sports brake. They are OK with a couple of sandbags in the trunk, but this is not a winter car... Blizzaks and Alpine were the only choices last year.

If you buy a tire+wheel package with the TPMS, be aware that it will have to be reconfigured (by the dealer) everytime you change the tires. I thought that a 50K car would be smart enough to recognize 2 sets of TPMS, but apparently not. I would have saved 400$ had I known this...

I have had Blizzaks LM22 and LM25's, Alpines, and Pirelli Sottozero's on my G35 coupe.

I would rate the Blizzaks first, then the Pirelli's and then the Alpine's.

The Blizzaks were just amazing for cornering and braking on snow, ice, and packed snow. They were also decent, but a bit squishy feeling on dry pavement in the cold.

The Pirelli's, to me, had would break traction under acceleration a little more easily than the Blizzaks. I'd say both the Pirelli's and Blizzaks did well in braking. The Pirelli's ran very quiet. I'd say even quieter than the summer Michelin PS2's I had.

I hated the Alpine's. I was just very upset with them and their traction and performance capabilities. I also thought they were loud

You bought the Blizzaks from the dealer in MTL? Do you have the choice between getting a tire with TPMS or not? What would the $400 savings have been?

 

TPMS is an add-on sensor... about $75 each on tirerack (if I remember correctly), so if he didn't get the TPMS then that's what the $400 would've been.

 

Exactly. TPMS is an "option", if you don't have them, the light will be on in the dash all the time.

for comparison sake, how much would the dealer charge for tires ? i've never asked. i know i will be spending quite a bit on shipping, duty and broker if i were to buy from tire rack. wonder if it will work out to be the same at the dealer.
