Question Mudslinging and FUD between dealers

I've been working with a few dealerships in the Southeast to lease a 2011 G37 Coupe in Lapis Blue with Premium and Nav. One of them has (well, trucked in) the car I want, the others haven't had any luck finding another one. It's becoming a question of how much extra I want to pay for getting exactly what I want, and I think the dealers have started to sling the mud at each other in order to scare me.

I found Infiniti of South Atlanta through TrueCar offering $2500 below invoice. I told them on the front end that it would be a lease to a non-Infiniti owner. They changed the offer to $1500 below invoice because they say $1000 of it is a purchase-only incentive. Fair enough if true. The car I would get from them is the same one that I want except in a different color. My experience with them so far has been very pleasant and straightforward.

Another dealer who was going to quote me for the different-color car told me that there was no money at all on the car and Atlanta was possibly going to have me fraudulently sign a statement saying that I have an Infiniti in order to get a loyalty discount. The dealer that has the car I want insinuated that Infiniti of South Atlanta has a reputation for the old bait-and-switch and would get me down there, then refuse to honor the deal. I'm not expecting this dealer to match the Atlanta pricing, and they're quoting me around $500 over invoice or about $2000 more in cap cost. Maybe that's really as low as they can go, maybe not, but that's no longer the issue here...

I would be perfectly fine with "I can't match these prices, here's the best I can do" but the mudslinging has given me pause, which is probably exactly what they wanted it to do. If the dealer in Atlanta were really so shady, I can't imagine they could stay in the program or have all the glowing reviews I find online. My research seems to tell me that Atlanta pricing is some of the best in the country. On the other hand, would dealers tell me potentially libelous garbage like this just to make a sale or torpedo someone else's? I might take the deal for the car I want if I can get them to give a bit more, but now I don't know if I should even deal with them if they're spreading FUD.

Thoughts?

Hey, I agree that Atlanta has the best prices on the country. Up until now you have no reason to doubt them. Other dealers opinion on them should be irrelevant. However, I don't like the fact that they changed the price when you told them it was a lease. It's true that incentives are different, but it's not right to advertise a price they won't honor. $1500 below seems fair with the current trends. You should avoid dealers that badmouth other dealers, obviously they won't give you a good deal and their only solution is to prevent you from going somewhere else. Do you mind if I ask you the details of the lease you're looking for?

THat dealer is perfectly willing to honor the price. It's not the dealer's fault that the incentive is for a purchase.

Not at all. 36/15K, all fees paid up front, no cap cost reduction, credit is plenty good for base MF. As in the OP, the car I actually want is the Lapis Blue coupe with Premium and Nav ($43,725). Splash guards and the trunk stuff would be nice to have ($44,120). The sport package is a no-go; I don't like the seats. Apparently this car is rarer than a six-leaf clover with a fairy pole-dancing on each leaf.

I am a New Yorker. When I was shopping for my car, I asked your dealership to match an offer I had and wouldn't even reply my emails.

times have changed and it all depended if we ever even got the e-mail if that. I got more people running that department now on it and the previous company we worked with we have no establishment with because of their spam blockers killing a lot of incoming prospects

I'd seriously rather go to the dentist than deal with buying a car.

I don't know how many times I got the "oh you wanted one with Nav?? Oh we can't' do it at that price" Even though in the e-mail chain, they clearly saw I wanted Nav.

Or "oh we don't have a black one. How bout one of these maroon ones"

Seriously, do people really just end up settling and say "well I drove down here, give me the one I dont want, for the higher price anyway" ?

That is exactly what dealers are hoping for.

The mudslinging is annoying, and it does kill your desire to want to continue shopping. I remember walking into one dealership with an offer from another, After 20 minutes, the salesman comes out with one of his managers saying that this deal doesnt include tax in the lease payment and they're offer was 50 more month bc it "included tax, and it was legit". And the car they were pushing on me had an msr of 36,5 when i knew the one I wanted was 37.5k. I ended up going to the original dealer and got a 39k sticker car for the same price that the other dealer wanted 50 more a month for. Dont believe the **** they say, they will do anything to stop you in your tracks and try to make you feel they are good guys trying to help you out.

You should read Confessions of Car Salesman
