I'm in the same boat, last lease payment is in Feb. But with the discounts on 08's and current 39mos 08 lease rates, I am considering pulling the trigger soon - just having a hard time justifying carrying two car payments.

Thoughts? Should I take advantage of 08 lease rate and big discount on a car now and carry 3 more payments? Or should I wait until January/Feb?

 

Did you check what the currount buyout is on your car? You could try selling it privately at carmax or put an ad on ebay or craigslist. If you can sell it and cover the buyout, you'll be all good. I don't have that option since my buyout is more than my car is worth.

Since my lease ends on 1/9/09 (still have December payment and then final payment when I turn the car in), I'm planning on getting the new car sometime around Dec. 20. I'm just concerned it will be hard to find an '08 in the color and options that I want if I wait too long. Right now there are two different dealerships near me with cars in the color and options I'm looking for, so I'm not too worried about it. If one gets sold, I'll get the other, and if that one gets sold, I'll just have to get a different color.

I think it would be stupid not to get an '08. Not only are they discounting them a ton (last offer I got was $38,995 for a 6mt with nav), but the MF is super low. If you get an '09, they wont discount it nearly as much and the MF will be a lot higher. I've even thought about rolling my last payment(s) into the new lease, but that doesnt make a whole lot of sense, so I'm just gonna wait another month.

 

Your post alone, justifies enough reasoning to pull the trigger on an 08. There really is NOT much difference - an 08 to 09 are IDENTICAL with minor differences, I've seen them and judged personally.

 

Thanks for the advice - I've explored all those options. Buyout is significantly higher than market value (including private sale) of my car. So selling won't work and having someone assume the lease wont work either, since I have 3 months left.

I have the same scenario - My option 1 and option 2 cars are both at local dealers right now. Fairly Loaded (Premium, Sport, Nav, Technology, 5AT) just different colors. Offers have been pretty good, $6k off MSRP with no mark up of MF or fees.

However, if I wait too long and miss the opportunity on one of the '08s, I can get an '09 via VPP. But I think a '08 deal right now would still be more aggressive than a '09 VPP.

So my 3 months on my current lease remains the obstacle...

 

Is getting the 09 for the 7AT enough of a reason to take on the slightly higher cost. All I been hearing is how the 7AT makes it a much better car. Plus Popular Mechanics named the self healing paint one of the top 10 auto tech advances for this year.

 

The 7AT - No biggie unless your driving highway. The self-healing paint - only if you plan to keep it for over 5 years.

 

7 at is a biggie that is why I am waiting for the 09. If it was a 6mt 08 all the way to save $$$$$$$$$$$

 

They've been saying that it's reducing 0-60 times. I can't lie though. The price of 08's is VERY tantilizing.

 

If I wanted an auto, Id maybe think about waiting til 09. Having a 7 speed tranny is a pretty big deal, as opposed to a 5. I always drive stick, so why not get on [08?
