I recall when I bought my 2005 G35 in October 2006 that the G35 coupe was rated the best 2 door sports coupe with respect to holding its value. Either that report was bogus, or something earthmoving has occurred in the last 2 years. When I checked the resell value of a 2005 G35 coupe with 20,000 miles, I discovered it resells for roughly $20,000! Seeing that I purchased my G35 less than 2 years ago for $34,000, that means it lost $14,000 in value. Roughly 40% in less than 2 years!

Excuse me, but how can anyone call this the best 2 door sports coupe to maintain its value? Goodness, a Chevrolet Cavalier depreciates less than a G35 coupe!

What were these folks smoking when they knighted the G35 coupe with such an honor?

 

The higher the cost of the car, the more it depreciates. Thats the best i can explain it... Cavaliers cost 20k, so after 2 years at 40% it will only have lost like 8000.

fwiw, i paid 36k for my g35 back in 2005, and when i traded it in about 3 months ago, i only got 16k. Talk about losing money!

 

Trading in at dealerships will always yield you a lower value. Selling your car is the best way to guarantee maximizing your car's value when you sell it.

Also note that flood in markets of certain cars also does not help resell values of cars. Look at the Ford Taurus, Chevy Impalas etc. Change in model style will also lower the value of the used car.

 

It's not only that the more the car costs, the higher the depreciantion. It's just the fact when Infiniti announced the release of the G37, that immediately killed the value of the G35.

 

It would appear it makes more economic sense to lease a G37 than buy one, no?

Your G35 started depreciating rapidly when the G37 came out. Before that you were all good.

 

Why would I pay sales tax for the privilege of renting a vehicle? I don't pay sales tax when renting an apartment.

 

^ In some states - like Texas and Illinois - you not only pay taxes on the depreciation, but on the entire cap cost! WHOA.

And, in Illinois, if you want to buy the car when the lease expires, you have to pay a purchase tax on the residual value AGAIN (not to mention the additional Chicago city taxes if you live in Chitown). State law! INSANE. Illinois has gotta be the worst state for leases. Talk about antiquated laws.

 

Trade in values for automotive in general has tankered the past year. This is due mainly to High gas cost and the economy going south. I wouldnt complain about the 05 g35 losing $14,000 in 2 years. Look them darn American cars are losing 40% right off the bat even before leaving the dealership. lol The G35 being a Premium gas only car, a Rear wheel drive car, and a cramped little car, plus being a model old since the intro of the G37. it sounds about right. I betcha your $34-35k g35 was going into heavy clearance before the G37s came out. so who's gonna pay you $25k for your 2 year old G35 when they could have gotten a new one back in 06 for $32k during clearance?

 

I bet if you figured out how to put a working vagina on that thing, you could get your $34k back easy.

Perhaps on the back end of the middle armrest compartment between the driver and passenger seat, and facing the backseat?

 

Seriously, its not that bad, my ex gfs mom got a 06 c280 4matic for $36500. And that was $200 above invoice. her car now with 35,000 miles on it is worth $16,000. You complaining about your G?
