Does your income affect your lease/finance?
My look at financing a car, house, whatever is that even if you could afford and get approved for x amount, always look toward getting something that is half that ie x/2. So I could afford a $300,000 house I went for a townhouse that was around $158,000. Same thing with a car. Don't stretch yourself too thin. Go for something cheaper and pay it off right away by applying a double payment toward the principal.
As for the save your money thing going around. This is how I look at it. I've got the ye ol' standard 401k going along. I would rather retire comfortably and not rich then to waste my fun time when I was young to invest for when I'm old and crippled. Ok that last sentence was harsh, but you have to find the middle ground so that you are procuring your future while still having fun when you are young. Youth is more important then wealth, but you don't want to retire and live off of the Mcdonalds $1 menu.
Also, I may add that I have had my 401k since I was 22 and not wait to 35 to start. If you invest from the age of 20-30 in a simple 401k through work you will be better off then most people that invest the same amount between the ages of 35-65. You'll benefit even more if you invest from 20-65 as well.
