"S" or not to "S"

Hey Folks-

New member seriously considering a G37. After reading, researching, talking, etc my concern is whether or not to get the "S" model. The concern is the tire size between the front and back. I will put 20-25k mi per year on the car and the salesperson raised this as a point of concern in that I won't be able to rotate the tires. Thus, I will need to factor more dollars into my yearly operating costs?

The question is what others are seeing on tire wear and what causes one to just keep the same size front and back thus allowing tire rotation and hopefully longer wear?

Thanks for your comments-

you'll be spending good dollars on gas with that kinda mileage on this car anyway....might as well still get the S, especially if you are getting the Auto wouldnt you want the paddle shifters?....Get the S if you want the sportier suspension with stiffer ride, and the more aggresive 19-inch rims and better big brakes....the bridgestones will probably give you 20-30k miles if driven normally only agressively once in a while...

if the only thing holding you back are the tires - and you still appreciate everything else about the S - then I would still opt for the S....tires come and go and you can always grab some all season Blizzaks if you live in a wintry state and use them for the winter months and switch to summer tires in the summer...that should even out the wear and give you a good 50k miles combined...whats some new tires every 2-3 years?

Well, the price of snow tires and wheels is another factor into the cost; if you are well off enough to purchase this car without sweating it, then you might as well get the S... you won't regret it!

Otherwise, and you should err on the side of caution—because you WILL drive this car more aggressively than not—be prepared to burn a lot of rubber. A good set of winters or summers will run you about $1k/set, so do your own calculations!

Is it hard to get winter tires for the S? Because of the S' brakes, 18" tires won't fit, so you'll have to get 19" winter tires (which may be hard I'm guessing).

I'm not sure, but wouldn't the 18" wheels from the 03-04 G35c 6MT fit?
They had the brembos back then...

There are several threads on getting winter tires and wheels for the S, just do a search.

18" alloy rims will fit, just not all of them out there (and unfortunately, you won't find 18" steel rims). My winter rims cost me about $800 taxes+shipping. Go to www.tirerack.com and do some "window" shopping!

I believe there is also a thread on here that confirmed the G35c rims WILL NOT fit the G37.

And from conversations I've had with local tire shops, not many manufacturers make winter tires that will fit our setup so your choices are limited and of course prices will be higher.

"S" option

Thanks for the comments. I am in Texas so winter driving is not a worry for me. I guess the business owner in me looks at things in an overall aspect. The thought of spending an extra $2k every year for tires gets my attention. However, I do like the other enhancements that come with the Sport Package so it may get outweighed anyway.

I just wanted to know reality as to what others were seeing for tire wear as well as opinions.

Thanks to all-

if you get the "S" you will be paying roughly $1000 every year to have your tires replaced. The tires on the "S" have a thread wear rating of 140 compared to 260. Higher thread wear rating = longer lifespan of tires.

Well, if you're a business owner, then you know about the tax deduction on car maintenance - provided you're using the vehicle enough times in your business!

If you're running summers only then it's probably more like $1k/year... then expense the tires for your business? lol

cruiseluva62886: There's no paddle shifters on the S!

vinny: I don't get it.
