Advice from you experts. 5AT v 6MT and finace

Hey guys,

I have been on G35Driver for a while now and am thinking about upgrding my life. I have a 5at G35 right now and its ok... but i was plannign on going 6mt with the g37 but then saw the paddles for the sport AT package and the rev-match and thought that would be so cool.

My question is: is the performance very different between the 6MT and the sport paddle 5AT?

My other question is: do you think i can get the 2.9% limited engagment price after the 2nd of the year? Do dealerships extend those type of deals?

I am excited to get a new g37 but i need to go into it smart and try and get the best deal possible. I meesed up with my G35, it was pre-owned 58k mile 2003, no sun roof, no bose, nothing...base base base. I bought it from Nissan with a scratched bottom bumper and chips on the hood for over 23k. I think i was taken advantage of, and i just want to go new and get a good deal on it.

Any help would be appreciated, i understand i have a limited time on this financing if it doesnt extend past jan. 2nd. so I will keep reading on this forum on any other info.

Thanks

As far as the financing goes, that can be hit or miss. Christmas time is the best time to buy do to dealerships trying to hit year ending numbers though so I wouldn't count on the financing lasting until next year. It might be there but it might not. If you want 2.9 then try to get it now but don't go into a dealership expecting that you need to get the car now. If you go in like you need the car, you will not get the best deal on the price for the car. That should be what is important, the price you pay for the car.

Now on the 6MT versus 5AT, that comes down to what you like. I don't really see owning this car without it being a 6MT. If you are talking about performance then get the 6MT because you have better control and feel over the car. The AT transmissoin is good in this car but it is no AT in the GT-R. Again it comes down to what you like. You will get many different opinions on this site which will be true to that person but not necessarily you. I would recommend that you go test drive a 6MT and a 5AT with Sport and decide for yourself. Good luck!

Sounds good. I have that new car fever ever since i saw what my 03 could still be worth. I thought its better to dump the g35 now before the price on it goes way down (since the new g37 is a change in body style). I am trying to email all the delers in the Northern California area to see what if I can get them to compete with each other on a price.

The issue with the 6MT and 5AT is it will be my first MT... But if it is easy to get used to (I have driving MT, just not owned) then I would like performance over the 5AT. What is the maintence cost between the AT fluid changes and the clutch replacement? Shifting seems fun but the paddles look really cool too... god the choices!!!

I really do have that new car fever and want it like TOMORROW, but i know I need to pace myself... it's just hard.

Heres some advice... buy before the new year... or dealers will not work with you like they will now... some dealers could care less if they make 500 bucks... just as long as there padding there numbers for the year... got a buddy looking at a nissan truck... the dealer told him he was in a contest with another nissan dealership and he didnt care if he sold it for no proffitt... the sell would help him... He dropped a loaded titan down 10g on the spot before test drive.... just an example

How does a trade-in work out then? I wont have my G35 ready to be traded in before the new year. Can I work out a deal first with price and then bring them the car for trade-in like the next week?

I also need to figure out the trade-in value and how to negotiate that! I shouldn't have waited this long to go forward with the purchase. But I should get rid of the G35 before the vaule plummets right? Plus the G37's are probably at their best price right now too?

Sounds like your outta luck for a end of year good deal buy... why is your car "not Ready"? if its mods on it... spend 2 days and tear it down!

you may get a good deal after the new year... but dealers aren't as motivated to lose profit cause they lost one of there motivators...

Crap... Well im in so cal and wont be back up to my home until the 28th-ish. My car has a trunk full of audio that needs to be taken out. I guess I could leave the speakers in. But trade-in must be at the time of signing the new purchase? I dont want to be SOL... The deal comes from the finacing right? When I go to the build my G and then at the end mess with the % and trade-in, and down, when I change the % the monthly payment only changes by like $70 a month. from 6.0% or 2.9% So really this limited Engagement doesnt really matter all that much. I hope im correct and making myself feel better by saying this.

6.0% and 2.9% is a huge difference. I've had to mess with that before too when I was buying mine.

Where are you buying the car? If it's so cal, I'm pretty sure you can get invoice pricing before the end of the year. Can you make it and figure everything out before the year end?

Don't rush, the dealers will pick up on it and you'll end up paying more for the car which will eat up your savings on the interest. This is exactly what they hope you'll do when they have a limited time offer. Here is what I would do in your shoes.

Go on Kbb.com and build your car, get the invoice price.

Email 8-10 dealers in your area and tell them exactly what you want. Inform them want to pay invoice and your willing to move quick if the deals right. You'll have to be willing to accept a few different color combos because most dealers won't deal much if the car is not on the lot.

Now you have to get your trade ready, clean it really well and
Take the 3 best offers and tell them about your trade. Most of the time they will want to see it, so again make sure the car is ready. It won't take much time at all to get it washed and remove the audio equipment.

Try to work with the dealer that gives you most for your trade, show them the purchase quote from the lowest dealer and see what they'll do.

A word about the tranny....

I have a 5at '06 sedan. My gas mileage is pretty poor, as I'm averaging less than 20 mpg. I think the manual tranny will help out in that respect, and also be a more fun ride.
Also, I don't see the rush to sell your current ride. It's taken most of its depreciation already.
When you are finally ready to buy your new car, don't even tell the dealer you have a trade. Get them to give you their best price, and when you are satisfied that's the best they'll do, mention you are thinking of trading your car. That way they don't get to play games by giving you a high trade in value, but raising the price you pay for the new one.

Ok well I have sent out a couple emails already to get a dialoge started. It should be easy to remove my audio, take the tint off my tail lights, and remove the custom emblem on the back (i have "BLK35" lettering). Im in so cal right now, but live in nor cal (Sacrmento), so i hear they do invoice pricing too. What happens while we are discussing the deal they ask if I have a trade? Do I say no until the very end? I feel kind of bad lying if they asked me about it.

As for the tranny, this will be my first MT and I dont have much experience with Manual. I am trying to go out today to test drive one on a local lot down here in palm springs. I'll let you know how much damage I do later!

Sometimes the best deals are in Dec and fall into Jan because no one wants to shop for a car in the cold. A lot of deals you see advertised to end in December will be back up again to "start the new year sale".

As for finance, check your FICO read the fine print. You will have to put some money down to qualify for those special low intrest rates and you credit score must be near the top.

I asked around and basicly its only through Infiniti Finance Service, and by near the top I mean 720 or higher. They will refer to this as tire 1. It drops to about 6% if your in tier 2 which is 680 FICO. Anything lower then that IFS will not do. Anything lower then that you can still get into a outside loan but that is where most people get raped. If you have late pays on your car and a low FICO dont be surpised if a bank ask for 10, 12, or 18%!! That is where dealerships pile on and sneek in a few points for themself.

Like the others said, clean up that car! I purchased my last G a few years ago the day after xmas and I was probably the only sale that day if not that week.

The other thing you can do is take your car to Carmax for a free estimate. It will be really low, but at lest its a starting point. When you go for trade in if they low ball your trade even lower, tell them you have been to Carmax which is buys as acution prices and make them match that deal if they want to sell you the car. Trust me, any price Carmax gives you has 6000 profit written into it so the dealer should be able to match that. They might tell you they dont want to because Carmax pays high but thats pure BS. Carmax dose not use Kellybluebook, they use the same evauation methods as a dealer. In fact the dealer has more wiggle room with the number becuse they can make up for some extra cash in both the price of the car and the intrest if you are not careful.

Just stay focused in the price of the car, your not trying to be dishonest about having a trade just trying to no muddy the water.

Agreed.... besides, is the dealer the only one that can be "dishonest" ?
They will rake you given the opportunity.
Don't give it to them.
The smart consumer will not let on that they have a trade until they are satisfied with the purchase price quoted.
