Wheel prep for powder coating
Wheel prep for powder coating
I've some rash I'm wanting to repair, and I'm thinking powder coating the rims at the same time. The local companies that do coating aren't really wheel refurbishment places; they'll blast and coat but won't do scratch/rash repair.
Not sure yet exactly how deep the scratches are; they may clean up with a bit of fine sanding no problem. But if they are deeper: Will pc work over bondo?
And shipping to/from the US would be about $500/wheel so I don't consider that an option
Regards

no need to powder coat the rims. Factory doesn't powder coat them they paint them. I was the head painter at a Nissan infinity dealers collision center for 6 years then dodge dealer for 4 yrs and now at a independent . Ive fixed plenty for rash. painting is fine plus if you curb them again no matter if you have powder or paint its gonna mess them up

I use PPG global system and to get the correct look you have to base them with black first then take D767 which is fine satin aluminum candied 60% with D895. that gives it the deep metal look. clear just 2 coats is all of 894 or if you want to be all crazy you can get the 8126 ceramaclear for it .
Economics of powder coating vs. repainting
Local cost to powder coat
Remove current coating via sand/bead blast: $42/wheel
Powder coat wheel: $42/wheel; total $84
Refinish/repaint wheel at Infiniti dealer: $342/wheel
!!!!!
I am thinking there are other, more cost effective painting options elsewhere, but this is where I'm at with the local options.
Rattle cans is looking attractive!

dont go to the infinity dealer. Go to a local reputable body shop. There is a reason it costs this much. If you rattle can it its going to look like garbage and it will not last even if it looks half way decent. Then when you have the money to do them the right way the shop will charge more to strip that garbage back off. DONT DO IT. coming from a painter who actually cares about his work I don't recommend it at all. THIS ISNT A HONDA save up and do it .
One of the wheels was actually damaged by Infiniti service shop; they took it in, repaired and painted it. Looks great. Even at the high cost that they charge, I am tempted to have them do it as
- Two of the four wheels are ok;
- Repainted the other two, properly color matched, might be cheaper than repainting all;
"Reputable body shop" (!!). I wish we had something like that here in Qatar!!!! That would be nice for a lot of things. The dealers do the best job and usually they aren't very expensive. This seems more expensive than other work but maybe it's more difficult than flat-ish panels.
I do wish I could change the color to something a bit darker...

Jperrone, where are you located?
I have a Shop in CA that I use and some of the Members in SoCal. They Charge $380 for a full set to get powdered. That includes sandblasting the rims to metal. Powdercoating has to be down to metal for it to adhere to it via magnetic. And then baked on for the finish. Takes about a week to get them Shipped from you them processing it then back to you... Shipping is not that bad... Shoot me a PM i'll send you their info..

I'm in the State of Qatar, which is in the Middle East, south of Kuwait, north of UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)
Shipping options/costs are "limited" from here. If I were back in the US, I'd be sending them off to someone (maybe your shop) and not looking back!!!! But I have to live with what options I have, locally.
