If you care at all about thoose rims, get tpms for your new rims.
Even if check pressure all the time,**** happens.
Tire rim leaks can be sudden, not only killing your tire/rim.
Idk how if anyone spends good $ on rims, would anyone want to deal with the headaches.
Never got a flat in 4yrs, however ended up catching 3 flats, 2 on ds rear one after the other.
Wouldnt even think of driving without them. With sensors at least i knew something was up.
3 flats in 1 month, i check pressure evry tankful so learn from my headache.

yes.

G37 came out 2008. TPMS became standard equipment on ALL CARS sold that year in the US, I believe.

We all have the Ford Explorer owners to thank for this.

 

For the record, Infiniti started using TPMS in 2004. They came standard with my ’04 G35 Coupe.

 

Well i would recommend just swapping over like everyone else says. and if you dont wanna do that then buy some from americas tires. They will take care of the sensors with a warranty. so if you get a TPMS light on again they will check it for free and do whatever needs to be done.

 

So if I got some after-market wheels and new tires, and moved the TPMS sensors over from the OEM wheels to the new wheels, do I need to reset anything at the dealership, or am I good to go? No additional expense?

 

Should buy the rebuild kits that have new gaskets and such. Once compressed they won't seal right if transfer over. We carry the kit for $3 ea/shipping.

You should be ok. There shouldn't be any additional expenses with them. I would say if you own an 08, there shouldn't be any rebuilding or battery replacement needed.

 

Can't replace the batteries as they are sealed within the unit. Rebuild kits will come with fresh gaskets which really need to be replaced once taken apart. A rubber seal to keep air from escaping that's been compressed under a certain torque spec isn't going to retain a seal when disassembled and reinstalled.

I understand the need to replace these rubber gaskets after a few years - if you're running oe tires and drive many miles, maybe sooner than later.

The question however, is it necessary to remove the tpms sensor from the wheel when changing tires?

I've never owned a car with tpms before, but did own a bike with such setup. In the 3 years of ownership and 7 sets of tires (I ride alot ), the tpms sensor was never removed. Care was exercised when removing and installing the tires so as not to disturb the device. Is this not the case with car wheels/tires too?
