I just want to lower my car a LITTLE (an inch or less). Here's a quote from a local shop... do you think that this is really necessary, or will I be fine with just eibach springs?

" We talked a little bit about suspension modifications where you talked about just doing a spring drop. While we can spec a set of springs I highly advise against doing just springs for a few reasons… When you drop a car with springs only, you are putting tremendous strain on the factory shocks, in a sense, they are never at rest and you can run into a leaking situation. If that were to happen, the dealer will not warranty the shocks because of the springs. Also, the labor is pretty much going to be around the same number whether we do springs, springs and shocks or coilovers plus alignment etc… There are some great coilovers that range from $1100 and up pending on mfg/model etc… Installation of pretty much the majority of suspension options out there would be in the area of $650 including alignment. If it were my car, I would go with the BC Racing coilovers which not only give you the ability to adjust the height but the rebound as well by 30 points… "

There are tons of people running aftermarket springs with stock shocks, specifically the Eibachs with no issues yet. They are right, it does stress the stock shocks but with a moderate drop of only 1" they should still last quite a while

 

does this shop happen to sell BC coilovers?

Shouldn't be a problem for at least 50k to 70k miles and hopefully by then there will be some aftermarket shocks available....

 

OK guys cool that's kinda what I was thinking... and if the factory shocks did fail, hey there's an excuse to upgrade then. For now I think I'll save my pennies as I'm doing a slight drop for looks not for the track.

A lot of us have eibach springs for the same reason as you. We want looks and a little stiffer suspension but dont want to drop over a grand on coilovers just yet. Yes it will eventually mess up your shocks but now that the 370z is out, there are a lot more parts coming out that will fit our cars.

Eibach is definitely the way to go to do a safe drop.

Dont let those guys do the install either. $650 for a drop and alignment is r@pe! Elite paid 200 and I paid 100 for install.

 

I'm slammed on H&R's stock shocks no probs yet 10k miles.

 

+1... I paid $300 for install, alignment, and oil change at the dealer!!

 

Wow, that is a good deal considering the alignment itself is $130 at the dealer.
