TPMS Question
TPMS Question
Hi,
Just put on my summer tires today (finally
). I bought the car late November, so I have never driven on them and they were stored indoor all winter...
Anyway, after about 30 minutes of driving, the TPMS light started blinking for a minute and now it is on all the time. I checked tire pressure and everything is OK (35).
Is there a way to reset the light without going to the dealer?
Thanks,
Steve

The light should go off after driving for a mile or so IF the tire pressure is ok in the tires. The dealership can set the level for the sensors so if it is below that level but still within spec then the light will go off. If you know the tire level is good in all tires and you are getting the light then take it to the dealership because something might be wrong with your sensor. BTW my tires are set to 36-37 PSI.

RDV: you have to go to the dealer to get the new TPMS devices recognized by the system. The system is looking for the old devices.

I had this problem after leaving the lot with the car for the first time. The manual says if the TPMS warning lights blinks for approx. 1 minute then remains on the sensor has probably malfunctioned. For me it would do this every time the car was started. They reset the TPMS controller as stated in the other posts and things are fine now.
I did not talk to the tech after they fixed the problem. I will call and find out what they did. But that is the same problem I had. The lights blinks and then stays on. If you don't catch it in the first minute the car is started you would just think the tire pressure was low because of the warning light being on all the time.
32 psi is where you want the tire pressure to be at. make sure all tires have the same pressure +/- 2psi then drive the vehicle for about a mile. If the light does not turn off then you would have to bring it to a dealership to have the sensors programed to the BCM. Disconnecting the battery will not work and would make it even worse.
To follow up on this...
1st to clarify: I have winter tires on separate rims with their own TPMS, cause I wanted to avoid switching the TPMS every season
Went to dealer today and they said that the light will always come on when the tires are changed and they will gladly fix it for 30$ every season. This is apparently because the computer can't recognize 2 different TPMS sensors. Now, I'm really pissed that I spent 400$ on a second set of TPMS

Yes, that is correct, the BCM can only recognize one set at a time (4 wheels only).
Disconnecting the battery or resetting the ECU will have no effect on this. I believe that a Consult III is the only way to program TPS.
There is a diagnostic plug under the drivers side dash - a 2 pin plug with only one wire in it - that when grounded causes the TPS light to display any system faults. In the service manual it tells you how to decode the blinks in to the actual problem - if I remember right there are 30+ possibly codes that can cause the light to come on.
It amazes me that with all the improvements that they have made on this car since '03 that the TPS system is as basic as it is. They should have updated the sensors to a version that would transmit acutal PSI insteald of high/low status. Then they could have tied it in to either the navi screen or the driver information center and given the driver something useful - real time monitoring of each tire.
Oh well, something to look forward to in the future!
