How much $$$ should a brake job be?
How much $$$ should a brake job be?
I have a 2013 G37 IPL Convertible at ~48k miles. Was quoted for a brake job by a local mechanic:
- New Akebono Pads
- New OEM Rotors
- Oil change (synthetic)
the total comes out to $1200ish. Seems high. Is that the standard or am I getting jipped?

Seems kind of high, but may depend on where you are as shop rates based on geography...brakes and oil change don't require any kind of special knowledge or tools, any mechanic should be able to do them...say 3 hours of labor plus parts...parts can be anywhere between 300 to over a 1000 depending on what's being used...
I'd say an average for that work is probably about 600.00-800.00

That seems high to me too. Miles also seem low for rotors, I'd think unless they are warped or very unevenly warn that they could just be resurfaced. If you have any mechanical know-how and access to some generally basic tools its a pretty straight forward DIY. You could source pads and rotors yourself for a fraction of the price.
A quick Google search shows under $100 per OEM rotor and under $100 per Akebono pad set (1 front and 1 rear). So $600 max in parts. $80 for the oil change. $500 is a lot in labor for a 30-45 minute job.
They are going to charge book time for a brake and rotor change.
$500 is actually average or better for a brake and rotor change at a shop.

If I remember right my mom took her previous Rogue in for an oil change, check up, etc. They told her she needed new brakes and rotors and quoted her well over $700 all in. She smartly told them no, and when she showed me the quote I laughed hysterically. I found a complete set of brakes and rotors on eBay for $130. I put them on myself and only charged her dinner.

I put new OEM Nissan rear pads (purchased on eBay) on my car for $65 DIY. Took all of 30 minutes. The rotors were fine so I left them alone.
I think brake jobs have become a rather common scam.

I'd just make sure those are OEM blanks and not junk Chinese rotors.

Sorry. Doesn’t seem like a particularly busy forum, and seemed pretty low key and friendly so far. Maybe I was wrong.
I actually just did my own. In my driveway. Pads and rotors all around. $500 is way too much in labor for 8 bolts and 8 pins, especially if you have a lift. The rear rotors were a bit stuck, but popped off easily enough with the proper encouragement.
