I'm thinking of purchasing a true coilover set up for my 2011 RWD sedan. Has anyone had the true coilover (vs. separate rear shock/spring) setup on for a good amount of time or miles? What are the effects if any? Any negatives to the car? I regularly carry 3-4 adults and this is the primary travel car so I want to be sure before I buy them.

 

with that much weight i wouldnt risk it. True colovers by nature slam the car. Plus the car was not designed to have all that weight in that location. There have been reports by the 350z that extra bracing is needed to prevent the sheet metal from deteriorating.

 

I'd be most worried about the upper shock mount distortion, as it isn't designed to handle all suspension load, as PNW_IPL noted. You will have to judiciously select a coil-over that can retain stock height and allows custom spring selection. You want stiffer than stock but nothing crazy or your passengers will refuse to continue riding with you.

Broadway Static, for one, will customize Fortune coil-overs. Chinese dampers, though, aren't considered particularly good.

After about three time attack events on my true type coilovers there are no issues. It looks/feels like everything is holding up just fine. Of course my rear is probably about 60-80lbs lighter with everything gutted back there and there are no passengers ever, but I do beat the hell out of it.

 

I would not call three events a long-term test.

 

Yeah, not industry testing these, just quick torture testing. I would imagine if they were going to cause issues it would be during situations where I push the car hard. Just adding in my 2 cents, haha.

 

I appreciate all the replies. They all make sense and even Lt8Che's 2 cents (haha) help. He probably has put more stress on his suspension in 3 TA sessions than we have all year. Either way, I'll keep researching.

I was hoping someone that had the setup on a daily driver would reply too.

 

I have a true type coilover on my car for about a year... no problems. I’ve had 4 track events and full car numerous times.

I guess I should have specified. I was looking for pics of how your car sits with them on. Sorry about that. Did you keep the factory arms (spring mounts) or change to adjustable camber arms?

Kw is pricier but have great warranty. They rebuilt my last set and gave me option of doing an advanced exchange where you get 4 new shocks and send back yours. They are rebuilt to new spec and look new for 200 bucks and that included shipping cost
