Strut mount issue and installation

Hey guys,
so what are they symptoms of worn out strut mounts and what is installation like of new ones? With that, I'm experiencing some harshness when going over bumps or anything else in the road, and Infiniti stated that the cause of this is related to the mounts.

Thanks!

Look at your struts in the wheel well and see if they are leaking oil.

Really? Yes. They have oil and gaskets in them that can leak. Mines been leaking for a while and has oil all over. Planning on replacing them and springs in December.

They're not cheap either IIRC they run about $90 each.

So if the strut isnt leaking oil and is obviously in good shape, then is it normal for the strut mount/hat to wear out and need replacing? Infiniti said the mount has a rubber base which can wear out and cause these noises I'm having. Also, if the hat/mount has to be replaced, does it mean the spring needs to be decompressed to do so?

Yes, it is something that can wear, not sure how common it is as far as having to replace them. And yes, the spring will have to be compressed to R&R.

The strut would leak hydraulic fluid if it is bad and you could visually see the leak. Typically it will look grimy as brake dust and debris will cling to it.

You can also try the bounce test. If you haven't heard of it, search for it on google.

I know that struts can leak, but strut mount is what I and the OP were referring to...

Yeah I read that as he was having an issue mounting the strut and installing it properly. My bad.

Well, I'm getting excessive road noise and going over bumps is really harsh, so I was told the strut mounts are shot. With that, does the spring have to be decompressed in order to complete the install of the strut mount?

Yes, autozone lets you have them for free, just have to make a deposit and return them in 24hrs if you weren't aware. Also grease the threaded spring compressor sliders real well and use an air impact for best results.
