BC Coil Over Clunking Sounds
BC Coil Over Clunking Sounds
I've finally had enough and can't stand the obnoxious sound from the rears clunking all day every day. Really takes the luxury out of the car.
Someone stated that there should be a rubber spring buffer in the rear? Was this supposed to come with the springs? Or do you trim down the one from the old ones and put it on top?
Anyone tried this?

Here are some threads that might help;

Clunking/Knocking Noise from RF BC ER Coilover - Nissan 370Z Forum
This is a commend problem. It does not have to do with the quality of the BC coilovers. This falls more on the install process, spring seats, rear sway bar endlinks, and over all spring/strut install setup in the rear.

ummm...it has everything to do with the quality of the coilovers. Yes, an install can always go bad and can attribute to clunking, however even a properly installed BC coilover can clunk. A good coilover (KW, Tanabe, Tein) does not clunk.
OP sell them and get something better.

I tore that rear apart 5-6 times at least until they finally sent me new shocks. It was NOT the buckets nor the coils nor the isolation rubber nor the preload. It WAS DEFECTIVE SHOCKS! At least one or both anyway. The sound "audibly" seemed to eminate from the right rear just as you guys say.
I was not able to duplicate it other than driving the car. So.... once youve covered all obvious...... think about substitution. Btw..... I swapped the noisy ones from one side to the other and in my case the noise did NOT change. I do not know if it was one ..... or both..... but definitively. ... the shock(s) was defective!
Ive been noise free for 3 -4 months now. That was a nightmare. Very aggravating noise. Good luck guys.
You have the noise because BC coilovers for our application often make this noise (not all, but many). Because BC. Your least frustrating solution is not to try to work out a solution with BC - they will make tons of excuses besides admitting that the product is badly flawed and it's their fault - but to get rid of them and buy something else that doesn't make the noise. You can literally go back and forth for months and waste a lot of time dealing with this crap. Get something else and be done with it.

Ok, I understand the issues here...but are you guys saying that BC coilovers are not a good option to buy because of the clunking...like other coliover brands don't have the same customer issues?

This list goes on and on. So what you guys are saying is it's just BC??? Thousands of people order coilovers from around the US from different brands, few people have this problem. By doing a easy google search you can see real quick that this can happen from any brand. The solution can be 1 of many but also can be found by a google search or a thread search. There are some exceptions, like if you go through the front or rear 4-5 times and your still having issues, in which the company should work with you to get you taken care of depending on the situation. So in reality, no mater the brand, you can have this issue when installing it yourself.
I am not subjective to BC. I value all bands for different reasons depending on budget, driving style, over all usage for the setup, and long term benefits like what KW offers. So if your looking to by coilovers, don't limit your options because of this thread or any other customer issues that every company deals with due to install error or even a product error based off the info others have provided through google.

So do you think that most other brand coilovers for this particular platform have a comparable number of issues as BC does? That in general KW for example is going to routinely make clunking sounds for absolutely no reason when properly installed? I don't. But I will concede that you probably deal with a multitude of products on many different platforms that the majority of us don't.
Well "Black Betty" I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. I just installed a set of KW V3's coil-overs on my 2012 G37S coupe and now I'm getting clunking noises from the front on both sides.
It's almost as if I forgot to tighten one of the main bolts for the shock either at the top or the bottom. Well I've taken the thing apart twice and redone everything and checked all the bolts for proper torque and I even preloaded the suspension while doing so just in case. Everything that I know which would hold the front suspension together is as tight as factory specs. allow. The car has only 20K miles on it. It has a nice ride on the freeway and seems to handle with a more precise feel, but on normal street driving around 35-45mph any little pot hole or rut gives me a dull metallic like thump into the cabin. On my NSX the KW's are much better in that regard. So what gives?
Anyone have a good idea about where to look or what to change? Please note, I previously had the stock shocks with the Eibach Sport springs on the car to lower it and it made no noises. Looks like trying to improve to an even better setup doesn't always work.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Good to know. I know that any coilovers mighty make noises. However the reports of BC making the noises are widespread on the G platform. Almost universal. Yours is the first report that I'm aware of on the KW. Not that none of them do, but it's not nearly as common. Unless there's lots of KW owners who just aren't reporting it.
Thanks Black Betty. I called KW for some help and they gave me the usual talk as if I never changed a shock in my life. Just make sure the top nut is tightened to spec. at 28 ft. lbs., which can't normally be done given you have to hold the shaft so it doesn't spin. Finally took my air gun to it and I'm sure there is at least 75 ft. lbs. on that nut. Re-tightened all nuts and bolts, strut bar and so on. Still clunks. Checked their min. max limits for the drop on this shock and I'm almost in the middle of the spec., so I'm not sure where else to look. Man the grip on the front end is tremendous with super fine control but it rides on the street as if it has no compliance and like I had slammed the car down to rim level. It's no lower than the Eibach sport springs and that's really not that low compared to other setups I've seen. The Eibach/OEM shock setup definitely rides nicer but doesn't give you the superb handling feel the KW's give.
Perplexed . . .

Sounds weird and unusual Bandit. And over tightening the nuts on top is not a good thing. I used to be the pastor of the If Tight Is Good, Tighter Is Better church. In this instance though it's not. And using your air gun is particularly bad. You don't want to spin the rod around inside the strut body like that. You can tighten the nuts by using an offset wrench on the nut while holding the flat sides of the top of the rod with another wrench.
I did it exactly the way you're showing in the picture and I did the installation twice just to make sure nothing was binding during the process. I'm going to remove the KW's tomorrow and replace them with the stock shocks and the Eibach springs which were on the car before the KW's. The Eibach setup was not making the noise. If that fixes the problem, then I'll stick with the Eibach setup and sell the KW's at a loss. That will hurt since the rear set hasn't even been installed yet and the fronts have less than 200 miles on them. I'm a little leery of the KW's really being designed for the G car. They say and reference their instructions to only the 370Z which I know shares a lot of our suspension parts, but I think there still is a difference in the normal ride heights of the Z versus the G37S. I could be wrong on that but I think that's what is happening here. Wish me luck.
