Tein Flex or Tein SS-p...?
Tein Flex or Tein SS-p...?
Hey all,
This is actually my very first thread... lol...
i have been good so far with the search option but wanted to get a bit more input for my next upgrade... The suspension...
Maybe i should mention, i own a IP 08 G37S....
On with Tein... i guess the main reason why im going with tein is because i had it on my last car before and i was pleased with the overall perfomance of my suspension... i had the Tein Basics on my Eclipse, base model. Guess i didnt need anything beyond that since i wasnt flying with this car.. more of a cruise and show purpose... However, i think that i wouldve preffered having the option of being able to stiffien the ride a bit more and didnt have that oiption... Liked it, but maybe a tad soft...
So now, for my next upgrade i want to purchase a set of Tein SS-p for my DD and want to be able to take corners well and take the G to beast mode and be able to have the option of adjusting the damping and make it stiff and have the ability to soften it when needed and make it so that the girlfriend wont hate on the ride on the way down to fontana (an hour drive).. lol... going back, i wouldve prefered if the Basics wouldve been a tad stiffer, the SS-p offers that stiffer setting that the Basics didnt...
NOW CHECK THIS OUT!!! i have the option of getting a new set of Tein FLEX (better option than the SS-p) for exactly the same price as i would on a new set of SS-p... set price of $1,500... might be able to drop the price more... anywho, I am really considering going with the FLEX... However, i am afraid that the FLEX would just be too damn STIFF for a daily driver in the Los Angeles city!! I am not considering tracking the car but want a really stiff ride when i ask for it, but would want to have the option for the softer setting if my mom were to sit in my G...
What do you guys think? Considering that i have the Sports model, and dont think its stiff enough, would the FLEX be ok to handle as a DD on the softest setting? Or should i just go the safe route and go SS-p...?
I would want to hear more from those that have experienced both, one or the other...
Thanks a million,

I just had the SS-Ps installed this spring. So far, no complaints. I started out with the softest setting all around. The rid was excellent, handling was better than stock but I bottomed out pretty easily. I next went to the recommended starting settings from the installation manual. No problems bottoming out after that. The ride was still nice, although a little harsher than stock. I have since gone a couple of clicks stiffer than the recommended starting settings. The ride is obviously harsher than stock but I don't mind it as a DD and the wife and kids have not complained yet. The handling is excellent. I still have quite a bit of adjustment to get to the stiffest setting. I have had no other issues with the SS-Ps (no noise/clunking etc.) I did have to install the SPC camber kit in the rear to get within spec. The front was OK but had no adjustment left so I went ahead and installed the fron SPC kit.
I spent a lot of time talking to my installer trying to decide between the SS-P and the Flex. Money was not an issue as I had already saved enough for the Flex. He talked with his Nissan rep and we all agreed that the Flex would probably be too stiff as a DD and I don't plan on any heavy track use so I went with the SS-P. My installer could have tried to up sell me but his shop is very honest and he works hard to determine what you really want to get our of your mods and how that can best be accomplished without spending more than necessary. I am very happy with the SS-Ps.

Thanks for ur honesty... good review...
I have been told and read that the Tein Flex is not a true track coilover... it is for more of an aggressive street coilover but can most def have some fun with it at the track... which is why i was considering this... i have spoken to reps that use the mono flex as a DD and dont mind the stiffness, (higher end) ... but then again each person's tolerance level is different...
Anyone here with FLEX Coilovers, or experienced the FLEX that can shine in?? as we all know that coilovers are suppose to be stiffer, so please elavorate...

I run the TEIN Flex coilovers with the EDFC so I can adjust the damping on the fly. You're absolutely right that the Flex is an aggressive street coilover, not a strict track coilover. There aren't too many G owners running strict track suspension, that I'm aware of. JIC and HKS make coilovers that are geared more toward the track, but I think they would be harsh under daily driving conditions.
Anyway, I do not find my suspension too stiff. That said, I prefer a stiffer ride. I have all the GT Spec braces and upgraded sway bars, as well. I should also point out that I do not daily drive my car, so I may feel differently if I had to drive it to the office every day. Who knows? However, I think ride quality is subjective. What I think feels optimal you may think feels terrible and what I consider slushy, soft ride quality, you may think is too stiff and hard.
For what it's worth, I've also had an Eibach Pro-Kit installed on my car and I felt that ride quality was far worse than the ride quality with my Flex coilovers, and, of course, I am lower now.
I don't know if that helps at all...
Good luck with your decision.

i've personally owned:
D2 RS coilovers (Civic)
Tein SS-P (Accord)
Tein Flex (Civic)
Tein Monoflex (Civic)
Apexi S1 (G37)
Apexi N1 (Fit)
From worst to best i would rate them:
D2 RS Coilover - by far the worst on street and track, i actually blew 3/4 of the dampeners on track
Tein SS-P - the lower you go, the softer your ride...you cannot adjust spring preload and height separately like flex
Apexi N1 - good for street, not for track
Apexi S1 - good price, good for street/highway, not for track
Tein Flex - expensive, but good for street, decent for track
Tein Monoflex - probably the best set i've owned, really expensive, overkill for street, good for track....
hope this sorta helps, tbh, everyone's gonna have a different opinion....

which is a reason why i am considering the Flex... dont want to deal with bottoming out or having it become soft the lower i go!! which you tend to experience with SOME coilovers that dont have independent height adjustment... i like the fact that the Flex are Tein's "ultimate" street coilovers with the ability to track and not have to worry bout blowing a coilover... believe it or not, as u guys should know, all japan competitors use TEINs on the Z's and G's....

This is a tough choice since i dont have the bank for a couple sets of coilovers... so far with the input and opions of those that responded and from what ive researched, i might just go with the FLEX...
My next mod will be the Tein FLEX or SS-p (leaning towards the FLEX) with the EDCF unit (why not?? changes on the fly sounds awesome), SPC front and rear (a sure thing), and the Stillen splitter...
Think it will be a great change...

Any other opinions? All is appreciated... thanks guys...
^^Glad to hear that...

I've had the EDFC as well and tbh, once you find that sweet spot, u'll never touch that damn thing! Is it worth the $400 as a decoration piece? it's for you to decide, but to me, i would have rather spend that $400 on something else....
on my last ride, i had installed lowering springs which eventually caused me to start bottoming out and that ate my shocks twice... yes, twice!! luckily the shocks were replaced under warranty... awful experience...
.. after eating up two sets, i then went w Tein Basics and that was a good expeience... never again, will i go springs... if ur gonna make changes to ur car, u gotta upgrade!! not down grade... gotta do it right the first time... and after 6 years, they are still running great... passed my old ride to my mom actually... lol... besided her v8 towncar, she wanted a 4 banger (cylinder)... she riding low and stiff... its actually funny to see her enter the drive way at an angle...
