How long should stock brake pads last?

Had my wheels off at the shop for my coilover install, and I asked them to check my brake pads. I have 18k miles on the car, never tracked, just occasional spirited driving...and the shop owner estimated they have 35-40 percent left. Seems a bit quick to me, what is everyone's experience?

I replaced mine at 25,000. It was making this nasty grinding noise at 25k.

How long brakes last is completely dependent on your driving style, even without driving harshly some people just wear the brakes more or less than others. I replaced my front pads when I installed my front 2 pc. rotors. The pads still had plenty of use left in them. The rear brakes are still stock with 70K on the car.
