Help with Akebono BBK

I'm looking to upgrade to the Akebono BBK but I'm a noob at this kind of stuff. I was reading an old post about them https://www.myg37.com/forums/brakes-...g37-coupe.html

but i still had a few questions.

1. Can they fit non-sport coupes?
2. What's the difference between the drilled and slotted rotors?

Yes they can fit non sport coupes. You have to remove the heatshields though or trim off a bit of it or else the BBK rotors will not fit.

As to the difference between drilled and slotted rotors, I'll people more knowledgeable answer that question.

Slotted rotors are usaully used on the track I think and they heat up and release gas through the slots, they look cool 2. I think the cross drilled ones help cool down your brakes withoutb releasing gas. My buddy has the slotted ones and they look cool, I just remember him saying this to me not sure how accurate it is though

Also, I'm thinking about ordering them powder coated red. Are these BBK's large enough to look good painted or will they come out looking corny?

IMO they look great powder coated! Slotted/drilled is more for aesthetics than performance. OEM rotors are fine for daily driving.

1. Yes.
2. For street / light track use, J-Hook, cross-drilled and cross-drilled AND slotted rotors (in that order) will give you more initial pad bite (better brake torque at the start of the braking event) than either plain-face or slotted rotors. Slotted-only is the next best and plain is the worst. For heavy track use, stay with either the J-Hooks or slotted only.

this is all correct, one thing not stated is the fact that the oem non-sport wheels(18's) will not clear the Akebono brakes.

Does the BBK require modification of both dust shields front and back? I've read that only rear need it, but not too clear on the matter at this point.

Would I be correct in thinking that the bbk front rotors are the same diameter as the stock xS rotors on the front? I ask this as there is a 'lip' I guess that bends towards the rotor just as the rear does.

oh no they are different, they are bigger, but the dust shield isn't an issue for the fronts. Only the rear dust shield would need to be trimmed.

ok thanks - What is/are the best way(s) to trim it? I know it can be replaced with a sport rear shield also, correct?

you can, but that's really labor instesive because of the emergency brake. Really not worth the time IMO. I just used a small air saw, took me like 5 minutes (per side) to trim.

So basically you're cutting off the lip that is 90 deg. to the rest of the shield?
