Problem with installing front aftermarket springs..Help!

So, I was trying to install my front springs today and I ran into a problem. I was trying to remove the struts but as it was halfway out, the bolt that attaches it to the rotor (the one behind the rotors) is at a different angle than the strut but itself. Tried hammering it out with a mallet and it wouldn't budge at all. The bolt itself is about halfway out of the strut socket, but since they are at different angles (socket of the strut and bolt that goes it) it won't come out any further.

I know I should just take a picture, but it was getting dark, and started sprinkling so I had to put everything back on. Heres an example of what I'm trying to explain, I know its kinda hard to see what it is.

What was I doing wrong?

Use a small jack and jack the strut up a little until you get the right angle to pull the bolt out.
