Head light Ballast failure, Replace or LED conversion?

Hi

So my passenger side headlight failed the other day.

I ordered a new HID xenon bulb on line and replaced it once I received it.

The bulb didn’t work, so I’m guessing it’s the ballast that kaput. I need to check the old and new bulb in the working side to confirm if the ballast has gone.

The dealer will sell you a ballast with a brand new headlight for $1500. No thanks.

I found new ballasts from these guys for $80

https://www.headlightexperts.com/cat...st/category/2/

So I’m contemplating 2 x new ballast, 2 x new bulbs so I hopefully don’t have to take the bumper off again for some time after fitting all the new parts. The parts would be around $200.

However, on Amazon I can get D2S LED light kit for $38!

https://www.amazon.com/MOSTPLUS-LED-TX1860-Headlight-Conversion-Warranty/dp/B07KP9RFPZ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=d2s+led+bulb&qid=1570383951&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/MOSTPLUS-LED-TX1860-Headlight-Conversion-Warranty/dp/B07KP9RFPZ/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=d2s+led+bulb&qid=1570383951&sr=8-4

So I bought one! Last night. After beer. It arrived today.

However, I don’t think it will fit for two reasons (see pictures too!):

  1. the plug may not fit the OEM wiring loom. Can anyone confirm if it will fit?
  2. The lead for the bulb with end plug is very short – I suspect this won’t allow fitment through the light casing in lieu of the ballast to the OEM loom. Any comments?

I’d prefer to know they will/won’t fit prior to loosing an afternoon stripping the front end down….

Any comments welcomed!

Thanks

You'll regret led even if they fit which I suspect the kit you posted will not. Get new bulbs and ballast and move on.

You have cleared my mind from the fog of the task of removing the front of the car to replace the headlight bulbs/ballast.

In the clarity I now see, yes, why mess with cheap components in a hard to access place. Crazy, especially with winter coming.

OEM it is!!!

Thanks!

It’s one thing for fog lights where they come on at your request (or DRL in Canada) but a main headlight is something I wouldn’t mess with. I’d say your doing yourself a favour getting OEM, last thing you want is to rip the bumper back off cause a Chinese bulb **** the bed!

So this story continues.

I got new ballast and Philips bulbs on line ready for project "take bumper off" This isn't nearly as bad as it sounds if a) you've done it before, b) don't have 10mm bolts that are rusted solid.....

Anyway I got the bumper off. I had to hacksaw the bolt off in the drivers front panel above the wheel. The nut the bolt tightens in was just spinning in the crap plastic holder, so no choice. 1 hr of manual hacksaw blade holding and sawing and cursing.

Bumper is off! Yeah!

3 of the headlight bolts came out - the one under the bumper is rusted away. Luckily it's screwed into a plastic lug so I could force it out. Same on both sides.

So the lights would move out of thier location - but getting the headlight wiring loom disconnected! Wow. Who designed this? They want shooting.

I could remove the passanger wiring loom but for the life of me could NOT undo the drivers side. I didn't want to break it, so decided to leave well alone as this light was working. What now it's not!!!! Loose connection found and sorted. I also tried the passanger side bulb in this light - it works...... man!

So I get the passanger side light into the garage and start to strip it down. Ballast retaining screw seized in and phillips head rounds out. Drill it out.

New ballast and bulb in. However I find the issue to the none working light. It's the wire connector onto the bulb. There are 4 metal connectors. 2 are intact, and the other 2 have burnt/corroded/failed and not there. I heard peices of them fall out as I removed the bulb....

So my question is where do I buy the wire that runs between the bulb and the ballast please? I'm certain someone commented on where to get them but I can't find any reference to them.

So now, I've put the car back together and awaiting to order the cable, so I can take it to bits again and replace this piece. Fun.

What a stupid design.

cheers

You can but the entire wiring harness, igniter (connector for the bulb) and ballast for under $70 on Amazon, I don't trust Ebay because often the sellers have inferior parts. Some people here found defective fuses too and it requires 2 fuses.

Buy from reputable sellers and you should be okay. Amazon has its own share of counterfeit and substandard knockoff parts that cause issues. It is not just eBay. The only good thing about Amazon is their return policy... Just saying...
