Headlight Bulb and HID (Might save someone some time)

The right HID bulb on my G was only lighting up for a second and then it would go out. After researching on the forums and etc, I learned it is likely the ballast. Once user even said "The HID bulbs hardly ever go out" Regardless of that, I decided to order replacement HID bulbs from Amazon. I didn't go with the expensive Philips, but a knock off. I tried the bulb, and now the thing won't even light.

Ok, next step is replacing the ballast. I removed my front bumper, and the headlight assembly. I switch out the ballast and I have the same result. THe cheap bulbs won't light. I swap in my old HID bulb, it lights for a second and then stops. Ugh. I put it all back together and do more research. I now read that 2011+ G's ballast is extremely sensitive and only likes the OEM Philips bulbs. THe cheaper HID's won't work. Hmm.. I call Autozone and was told $100 for the bulb. I next check Amazon and find a Philips bulb for $46. I ordered that, installed it and turn on the lights. Instant light from the Philips bulb!

I realize now that I could have swapped the headlight bulb from one side to the other to troubleshoot this and that would have saved me a lot of time.
I never thought that the quality of a bulb would prevent it from working.
My goal with this post is to save someone the trouble I went through.

Good info, most people try to cut corners and rightfully so, bulb prices are all over the place. In this case, you should never go cheap on the essentials like headlights or brake pads/rotors..

Had the SAME thing happen to me. I've had Kensun 6000k bulbs for 2 years with no glitches. Until a few weeks ago.

Just ordered a pair of MORIMOTO XB HID 5500k from theretrofit.com!

I got the OSRAM CBH D2S bulbs. Expensive, but worth it.

I have changed the ballasts and HID bulbs in my car - Sometimes my light would flicker and turn off and I have to switch the lights off and then turn it back on - Usually on the 3rd attempt it works just fine
