Front Crossmember Damage

I took a heavy hit on my front crossmember and sustained some damage. I was driving fairly quickly when this happened. While I was changing lanes I hit a dip causing me to bottom out on those little yellow lane dividers. I heard a loud smack as soon as I bottomed out. I took some photos. Should I be worried about this damage? Is it safe to drive? Will this part break if too much stress is put on it? I.E. tracking, spirited driving, and hard accelerations. Please response ASAP. If it needs replacing, I will consider parting out the car.

Wow, that's an ugly hit. I would be very concerned about the structural integrity of the subframe after that hard of a hit and even more concerned about damage to components above the area of impact that you might not have noticed.

That being said I wouldn't necessarily part out a car B/c of that...I don't know if you can weld reinforcements to something like that or if I ever would, but it may be an option ......

what is probably an easier/more practical option is grabbing a used subframe off ebay or from a wrecker.... you can get them for about $200 shipped and replacement labour isnt as bad as you might think.

The car tracks straight still. No abnormal pulling or wandering. I’m just worried about the crossmember collapsing on me one day. I don’t want that to happen as I do track the car once a month. I don’t think I have any damage to the components above as I had the dealership give me a multi-point check when I was getting the car serviced and they didn’t report any damage besides that and the rear crossmember bushing.

I personally would be concerned as well. I would go to a trusted shop and see how much and what kind of job it would be to swap in a salvage yard subframe/crossmember. Getting it on a lift to assess any other damage you may not notice as well, would be a good idea.

Ouch! I would definitely have that thoroughly inspected, and probably repaired, by a certified, trustworthy mechanic.

Whatever the cost to repair, it will cost a lot more to fix if it breaks and the bottom of the car gets ground into the concrete.

My $0.02

I think this should be covered under insurance, probably collision. I'd get some estimates then compare that to your deductible. If your deductible is high then it probably makes sense to pay for this out of pocket.

As mentioned, the car bottom out with enough force to take a chunk out of the cross member. Other damage is possible too. Have the car examined on a lift by someone that knows what to look for.
