PSA Diode Dynamics Headlight Bulbs

So I ordered two sets(unintentionally) of headlight bulbs for my 2013 G37s Coupe. First off, I'll take blame for not understanding headlights/bulbs very well. Looking on Diode Dynamics website(via the bulbs by vehicle) they list the High-Beam and the Low-Beam separately. I assumed that there were 4 bulbs total when in fact the Low and High beam are ONE bulb each. I'll just eat that for not knowing(but they should have it as one bulb their site).

On to the actual issue at hand...I'll just copy what I emailed them this morning after having received a "Thanks for your order!" email from them asking if everything was OK.

Interesting you should ask Paul. I just installed the headlights and running lights on Saturday(Fogs the week before). Installation went fine, quite a bit of work, but all seemed to be well. Bulbs worked perfectly, love the color/brightness(they also match my fog light bulbs I purchased from you). This morning(I come into work just before/as the sun is rising) however on my way in to work my lights didn’t seem very bright at all, I could see that something was on, and it was light enough to not be an issue. Upon arriving at work I got out of my car and headed into the office and turning to look at my car I noticed ONLY the fogs and running lights were on. My actual headlights were not on at all(note 99% of the time I leave the light selection on Auto).

As I had to answer some quick emails I just went into the office for a bit. About 30 minutes later I went back down(still dark enough that auto would turn on headlights) and started the car. The running lights and fogs came on instantly, still no headlights though. I had to play around with the switch (auto/on/off/brights/etc) to get the headlights to function at all. I’m hoping this is just a fluke, but not having the lights work like factory is definitely not acceptable. They worked perfectly Saturday and Sunday night. Any ideas?

And their response:

Hello,
I do apologize, as we have seen the 2012+ G37s do not accept any aftermarket HID bulbs, which is why we do not currently have any listed for these years! The ballast is very picky on which bulbs it will accept, and we are working on a solution for these, but if you did want to return them, we are more than happy to help.
Again I'll take the blame for it saying 2008-2011, but it sure would be nice for them to say "By the way these really won't work on a 2012+". My fault not theirs, but their website could be a bit more informative.

Anywho, this is just a PSA. Do your research before you buy stuff, and note that the bulbs don't work very well on a 2012+.

Do note they're being cool about a return/refund, but I'm not going to be able to get my hours worth of installation/uninstallation back.

Their website did say they weren't compatible with your car...

Your year was clearly excluded from the compatibility chart. They can only do so much, and it looks like they are even willing to take back the used parts that were due to a misunderstanding on your end.

I think the real PSA here is to read the whole description for an item and if you have any doubts, ask before buying. This thread puzzles me a little since you bounce back and forth from being slightly bothered at them not being clear enough, to content with their response.

Other than the product description saying 2008-2011 I'm not sure where you are seeing a compatibility chart at all. It's easy to assume that these websites don't get updated often and that they just hadn't updated it to list 2012/2013. They are after all just light bulbs.

Indeed. I take all the blame, just pointing out the issue(s) to anybody else that might be in a position to make the same mistakes I did.

I think DD is a good company, it wouldn't hurt them to supply a bit more information on their website though. You know, for the uneducated idiots like myself.

My "compatibility chart" reference was in to them specifying dates.

Whenever you see dates references, and yours isn't included, it's best to ask why. This car has had a few facelifts/updates/revisions in the past 8 years of production and it can affect compatibility.

I can certainly understand OP's situation, and I do apologize for the inconvenience. It's uncommon for OEM HID replacement bulbs to have issues from year to year, but we've addressed it on the forums before and removed them from our site when the issue was first reported.

We are working very hard to provide the most updated listings and model year compatibility on our website, but we have over 10,000 items listed on the site. It can be a time-consuming process. We also have a new car in our studio every week for comparison shots and new product development.

If you are ever unsure on compatibility or which items to select, please don't hesitate to give us a call: (314) 205-3033, send us an email: contact@diodedynamics.com or send us a PM.

The Infiniti G37 is a vehicle that we've done extensive testing on, so we are familiar with install and which products work best.

Thank you for your support, and we will get smakfactor1 taken care of!

Nick C.

I'm sorry for the trouble you experienced. As you said, the product is listed as compatible with 2008-2011, and not all years. It is impractical for us to try and list both "compatibility" and "incompatibility" information for each product.

As you mentioned, we'll be glad to help you with a quick return for refund.

As Nick said, we work very hard to maintain accurate listings, and our staff is always available should you have any questions or need clarification on fitment. I'm not sure where you are seeing separate high and low beam listings, as there is only one replacement HID listing for the G37 Coupe. If there is an error, please let us know so we can correct it.

Thanks!

I've seen DD grow from a small budding company to a larger, well accepted company. It is customer service like this that helps them in their endeavor. Well done!

Thanks Paul. It's listed seperately on the diagram...so I clicked the Low beams/ ordered those. Then went back and clicked the High beams/ordered those. Again my fault, but it would be less confusing to have one link say "High/Low Beam". Just my 2c.

And while a refund sounds nice, I'm not concerned about the money. I want lights that work, get back to designing for the 2012+! ;p

I thought it was the 2011+ that had the newer ballasts that were picky with aftermarket bulbs.

I know I had my share of issues with Morimoto HID bulbs, and returned two sets. I am running Osram CBI now and they turn on each and every time on the first try. I love those bulbs.

Osram CBI should work on just about every car. It's tier 1 and priced accordingly.
Osram owns Sylvania btw. I've just started seeing the Osram name in Lowe's or home depot as a household bulb. I've done some internet research, and people are saying that the D2S Osram CBI is the same bulb as the Sylvania D2S Silverstar.

I got mine from "headlights quick", but "the retrofit source" is also popular here. BTW, Morimoto is probably the largest US importer of Osram automotive bulbs. The bulbs I got from "headlights quick" were shipped from"the retrofit source", and Morimoto, in some way, owns "the retrofit source".

They're all a tight knit community.

I found a 15% off coupon to use at headlights quick so I bought from them.

There's 2 bulbs to choose from imho, either the osram xenarc cbi, or the osram xenarc night breaker. The cbi is whiter (5500k) while the night breakers are a little brighter, but a warmer white (4300k). Check both sites to see who has the best prices.

Some people prefer Philips bulbs. They're also tier 1, but I like the Osram better.

Here's a link to the exact bulbs I bought:
