2011 OEM spoiler and trunk paint turning orange

Hey guys,

After installing and then reinstalling my rear OEM spoiler a few weeks ago, I have started to notice some orange in the paint around the spoiler on my trunk. It is very faint in the pictures and is more noticeable in person. I removed the interior trunk lining and there is no rust present. Its been raining where I am so I think that could be the cause. When I applied the adhesion promoter I over applied so I am thinking that maybe the orange stain is from the excess adhesion promoter. I wiped it down with isopropyl alcohol and then waxed it but the stain is still there. Any advice is appreciated. BTW the adhesion promoter I used with 3M number 06396, after reading the information sheet maybe I shouldnt of used it....

Thanks
rox

You'll probably have to use rubbing compound and a polish to get it cleaned up. Maguairs Ultimate Compound followed by their Ultimate Polish should do the trick. Did you use the adhesive promoter to give a stronger bond to the double sided spoiler tape? The new 3M tape along w/ the securing screws should be sufficient for a good bond, I doubt the promoter would be necessary. My OEM spoiler just has the original tape and only the inner 4 screws holding it down and it's been solid from day 1. Hopefully it's just the surface of your clear coat that's affected.

Sounds good. I will go get some of the compound and polish you recommend. Should I wax after the polish and compound?

Could this be rust growing underneath the paint? I compounded the car, polished and waxed yet the orange is still there. Sort of worried. Thinking about a trip to Infiniti tomorrow. I will post pictures right now.

Looks like you do have a problem... common with QAA cars... see your dealer.

Went to the dealer. The service manager looked at it. They tried a compound and polish but no luck. If it spreads or gets worse they told me to bring it back in. Any ideas on what I can do to fix it without a new paint job?

That looks to me like you stained the clear coat with the adhesion promoter. Take it to a body shop and see if it can be color sanded and buffed. Maybe you'll get lucky. Good luck

It is an issue with the paint.. we seem to only see it on the white cars...

My 09 G is QAA paint and I have the OEM spoiler but no discoloration of the paint so far. I will be keeping an eye on it from now on though.
