Thinking of doing this to the chrome fog trim rings Ill need to install.
I know paint will chip down there, that low.
Black chrome should look good at least.

 

Incidentally, i just bought the kit last weekend. Haven't used it yet though. I think if you apply the clear thick enough, it'll help prevent damage.

 

Duplicolor makes great stuff! I've used the PerefectMatch paints to paint my side view mirror cover with 100% OEM Factory paint results. I also have used there paints to do my engine bay. Best Spray paint for cars period , but you must know how to paint, wet-sand and polish for best results.

PS: My Results are that people don't believe it! They even think I had all my Engine bay sections powder coated. I just did a lot of wet-sanding for the glass look.

 

I painted a few of the plastic chrome pieces on my motorcycle last spring and it still looks good. Just make sure you clean the pieces you want to paint with alcohol or paint prep, and have some patience when you are painting them.

I can't speak of its durability though since it's basically inside a sealed unit. However, if it's as durable as NiteShades + Clear, then it should work just fine. I have NiteShades and high-temp clear on my grill. It's not as chip proof as Plasti-Dip, but still better than just the bare OEM plastichrome.

As for tips, be sure to wash the material as clean as possible. Wipe it down with alcohol prep wipes and make sure you don't handle them with oily hands. Remember, you're applying on smooth chrome surface, every bit of precaution helps in ensuring the shadow + clear sticks and stays there.

Prior to doing the headlights, i tested the Shadow Chrome on two chrome vanadium wrenches, one that i just wiped down with alc prep and another that i washed (w/ soap), dried then wiped. The latter finish came out much (much!) better and has withstood the nail scratch test.

When spraying, make sure you shake the can long enough and dip it (the can) in a warm water bath between sprays/coats. Multiple extremely light coats is better than a few medium coats. This stuff is almost water-like, any heavy coat will end up running and/or pooling. Spray from a good even distance. Also, place a regular chrome piece somewhere in the vicinity. This will act as a control to see how dark you've gone. Remember, too, that it get a shade or two darker once everything dries.

Also, if you decide to mask the area with painters tape, remove the tape before anything begins to dry, otherwise it will lift some of the sections. If things have already begun to dry, score the edges with an X-Acto to get a clean separation between mask and painted areas.

Although Duplicolor doesn't mention it, i think it may be worth trying out an adhesive promoter as well, although i haven't tried it.
