Plastidip Cutting Help

I used plastidip for the first time on my grill yesterday with mixed results. Came out nice in the middle but I had a problem with a precise cut when I removed the masking tape. I also want to do the valence but what is everyone using to get a clean edge? I feel like using an exacto knife will scratch the paint.

i had the same issue. i used an exacto knife and end up scratching part of my grill. the edges didn't come out clean and I didn't like the texture so i took it all off. went with vinyl wrap instead for now. i may decide to paint it later.

I just dipped my front grille this weekend... I taped off the top bar and the lower bar, sprayed it black in the middle. I just used a razor blade and very lightly followed the line of the painters tape where I needed the seam to break. Came off without an issue and turned out quite well.

You think that'd scratch the paint on the valence? On the grill you're just cutting the chrome which doesn't show scratches nearly as bad.

I put on about 4 coats of plasti-dip, so it was on their pretty thick. And I said "lightly", really you just run the blade along the tape line without applying any real pressure to it. Didn't scratch anything. I'd post pics, but I'm at work, no camera and no photobucket account =P

Try using a toothpick instead, worked for me when doing my emblems.

Call me crazy but you think if you ripped off the tape immediately, before it dries, that it wont pull? Ofcourse you'd have to retape for everycoat, but if you tape it, spray it quickly, then rip the tape off then maybe that could work? I'm going to have to do a little experimenting, with everything above.

Either battle with cutting or put it on somewhat thick in one coat then remove the tape while it's still well. That's what I had to do for my valence, you run the risk of having drip marks.

Putting on quick 2-3 coats (about 10 mins drying time per coat I'd say) and then going along the outline gently with a tooth pick worked for me.

Or just peel from the side of the tape that the plasti-dip is closest to. I did zero cutting to get a clean line, just peeled from the side that's not obviously going to pull the coating up.

It's science.

easiest way is to just take out the grill and paint it

I took my grille out to Plasti-dip it. It has perfectly clean lines and it was far easier than painting it. It's not necessarily a matter of laziness though, it's a matter of "do I want to keep it this way?".

Also, grille. A grill is what you cook your burgers on.
