Headlight Film Install

I've searched and only found a couple of hits. Looks like not many of you are using any sort of headlight protection film (Xpel, etc). Those that are seem to be doing it so they can get blacked out lights as opposed to protecting their headlights. Does the G37 not need it?

If you are using it, how was the install?

I am also thinking of buying film to cover what Xpel refers to as the "rear luggage area"....the bumper area just outside the trunk where you end up dragging all sorts of stuff over and occasionally hit the bumper. Does anyone have any expereince with this Xpel kit?

I had Ventureshield (a clear bra) installed and it included the headlight and upper bumper lip areas as you describe. Not sure if you're only looking to protect those areas but I definitely recommend a clear bra installation. Mine included the front bumper, partial hood and fenders, side mirrors, headlights and rear bumper lip.

Step 1: STOP

Every set of headlights we have ever received with headlight film, whether black or clear, looks like pure crap.

Theres ALWAYS little bubble or wrinkles and it just makes the lens look slightly blurry, almost like it has orange peel.

I do not think you will need it, sometimes clearbra installers will do it for you.

3M is the one infamous for its orange peel. VentureShield (even though it was bought out by 3M) doesn't have that look. I just had my car done by a pro tint & film guy last week. The main problem for the headlights is with sedans. You either have to stretch the film or do a two-piece/cut.

We did one-piece (took 3 hours just for lights) and there are some stretchmarks, mostly visible when the light is on. Will probably re-do for two-piece once I drive around more and see if there are any more issues that will come up with film. With 90% highway driving, not taking any chances on, what, a $2,000 part?

My Ventureshield is totally clear on my headlights - no blurring or orange peel that I can see.

I have Xpel on mine and all my cars in fact. If I did not tell you, you would not know it was on the lights. Those with crappy results had a crappy install..............

Stoof speaks the truth. Filmed/tinted headlights and taillights are fail against true painted lights.

g37musings,

did you self install? Am I smoking crack thinking I can install these myself? I've done a fair amount of decal application (bicycles and race cars) so I'm not a total newbie but I'm certainly not a seasoned pro. On the Xpel website the headlight film is a five star (out of five) level of difficulty. I'm not sure what that really means though. Is this relative to a total newbie or a pro?

Thanks.

DO NOT attempt it by yourself. I have used a guy locally for about 6 years that does this and he says headlights are a PIA. 5 is the most difficult install. Even pros mess them up sometimes.
