new paint
Any other black car is better than the paint on our G's. It's sooo easy to get scratched.. even the wind and dust can put scratches... the paint is just one of the reasons I'm thinking about going EVO.
Wow, all out of pocket or is infiniti chipping in... (no pun intended) So I guess they're not using the inifiniti paint and clear?
Wondering if it would be prudent to have a new car clear coated with a couple of additional layers before any damage occurs. Would probably be cheaper than going the route you had to go.

I'm not sure if you can clear over existing paint or not?? If so, then yeah, that would have been the way to go....
Partly my fault, I didn't visit the forums before buying. I guess I assumed a ~$42K car would have decent paint.

I thought the same too.. your not alone.
. but if luxury isnt part of your concern then i would say go for the evo. if it is then i would just repaint it with a better quality paint if that was the only thing that was making want to sell it
Out of curiosity, and without doing a search, did the G35's have this same or similar issue with their factory paint? Like everyone else, I wish I would have known about this before buying the car, though I suppose I would have still bought it since I've always loved this car.

"Most people recognise jet black as "plain gloss black" without metallic. As most paints these days are water based these base colors look terrific after polishing and waxing etc, BUT they need constant weekly attention, are usually soft and prone to scratching and thus not the ideal choice for the busy family man. "
It seems everyone has soft paint. A detailer told me Maserati and Aston Martin has softer paint than we do.

This is a rare case when the US might actually be ahead of Europe and Japan in this one area on automobiles.
Someone more knowledgeable correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that most of the rest of the world has gone to water based coatings on automobiles (base and clear coats) because of environmental regulations and concerns while US automakers can/do still use solvent based coatings. It's not a matter of how thick the paint or clear coat is, it's simply that it its much softer than older less environmental friendly paints.
I have actually scratched my paint with a clean microfiber towel by rubbing too hard. Other colors may not notice, but on black when it's clean and polished I can actually see this happen. Absurd.
