Help Backup camera picture very cloudy
Backup camera picture very cloudy
Hi. On our 2013 G37xS the camera picture is very cloudy/foggy. You can see the objects behind the car, but they are as if you were looking through a foggy window. It happened pretty much instantly. One day it was fine and the next it was foggy. It may have happened while having the car washed and waxed so I thought it might just be some wax that needed to get wiped off. But wiping it off with a microfiber cloth did not help. I then wiped the camera off with isopropyl alcohol but that did not help either. I'm thinking it may be on the inside of the lens and in that case I'm not sure if I can break the camera down to that small detail. Any ideas? Thanks!
Does the lens look clear or cloudy? How does the display itself look? Is everything clear? I'm not sure if cleaning the lens with alcohol was a good idea, but...
These cameras are sealed and cannot be disassembled without breaking the camera itself. Even if moisture found a way inside the unit, you would be not be able to dry/clean the inside of the lens.
Assuming the display is clear and free from distortion, you will likely have to replace the camera. It is a relatively easy repair and used cameras are all over eBay for cheap.

Thanks very much for the responses and info. The lens itself looked cloudy but couldn't tell if it was on the inside or outside. I had wiped it with alcohol and also tried to polish it with 3M compound but did not make any progress. I just picked up a G37 project so I compared that lens to this one and the project car lens was very clear like you'd expect. I decided to take the camera out so I could look at it a bit closer and get the p/n off it to verify which one it was. I have 1200, 2000, and 3000 grit sand paper so I decided to wet sand it and then polish it to see if that made a difference. It turns out that it did remove whatever was on the lens and it now looks good physically and on the screen, so it seems there was some type of very heavy residue or maybe a sealer over the lens that for some reason turned cloudy. I had a similar issue with a backup lens on a Sonata years ago but the picture wasn't this cloudy and it was easier to tell that the issue was the lens. Thanks again. Cheers
