Random HD Question

I was wondering...if I burned a cd with mp3's and loaded the disc, would it "record" the disc? Or does it have to be in whatever format cd's come in? I searched HD questions but couldn't find anything along these lines. Thanx in advance

I'm not sure what you mean by "record", but I just burn MP3 discs in the standard MP3 format (data disc style). I can usually get about 12 or so albums on one of my discs. Plays without issue in my 08 (premium sound w/o navi).

I think he's asking about the musicbox option on the car. I'm not sure. Why not give it a try? Your overhead cost would be 1 cd.

Im pretty sure most hard drives in cars are 10gb or less.

Im going to say it rips them to 128k or 192k at most.

10gb of wav files would be like 12 store bought CDs

Yes the music box feature...my bad. It records cd's automatically and I wanted to know if i would pull mp3's from a burned disc. It sounds like no, but like Nguyen said it won't hurt to try

The MusicBox is actually pretty limiting in its implementation.
It will only rip AudioCDs and the titles will only come from an onboard CDDB. What that means is if you're trying to rip a CD album released after your car, you will not get titles.

I'm not even sure if it will rip a cd if it's not found. Perhaps someone can chime in?

I do know that the option was removed from 2013 G's.

Yes, the musicbox recorder will only record audio cd's, so no MP3 discs. If it cant find the CDDB info, it will just tag the recording with a date and time, and assign a track number. I do not think its possible to rename these files or not (I havent tried looking for that function)

Music Box was discontinued mid 2012

My 2012 G37S purchased 8/31/12 does not have it.

IPod works great

If you burn a CD using iTunes, you can burn the track with the text of the track title, artist and album. It's a checkbox in the settings screen before you burn it.

Do people actually use the music box? I've read somewhere that it takes forever for it to rip cd's onto the hard drive.

I have used mine. Sometimes there is $h!t on XM so I just use that cuz its easy to access. I dont have a lot on there but its cool to have more music on the fly...mostly my classic hip hop stuff that radios dont play. It does take a minute or two to rip a cd...but it is not bad. Usually you are listening to the cd while its ripping anyway so...
