My nav has gone haywire

Well, after six-plus years and 27,400 miles something has finally gone wrong with my car. The navigation system has gone haywire. Upon startup the intro screen will dim and not respond to any inputs. Then a brightness icon appears that does nothing, forcing me to press the brightness button to finally get to the map screen. Button functions are intermittent so I have to use screen inputs. I seem to get all functions at that point except when pressing the INFO button. Either nothing happens or I get the DESTINATION screen. Of course that denies me traffic info and fuel readings. etc. I’m curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Yes, before you suggest I take the car to the dealer, I did just that an hour ago. Thank goodness the service rep experienced all the problems I just described. I‘m still under my extended warranty so I’m wondering, short of replacing the unit, what they’ll do to fix it.

While I was there, I finally got around to having them do a 30K service, including replacing brake, transmission and coolant fluids. In that they’ll have the car for a few days, they gave me a nice 2013 G37 sedan as a loaner. It’s nice, but doesn’t have nav.

Weird symptoms. I have not personally experienced those symptoms or any issues at all with my nav and haven't seen anyone post your problem exact before now.

But as far as what the dealership will do, I would suspect that they'll make sure it has the latest software update and if it doesn't, update it. If that doesn't fix the problem I would think they'll just replace it with a new unit. They tend to do more part replacement than repair of existing parts.

Good luck and let us know how they fix it.

I'm sorry you're having trouble, but glad your warranty will cover that!

While we're on the topic of screwy nav units, has anyone experienced an intermittent problem where they turn the car on, but the nav screen does not turn on? Turning the car off and back on usually fixes it. I haven't taken the car to the dealership since I can't predict the problem and they'd be unable to duplicate it.

The dealer called me back this afternoon and said they’re going to replace the whole nav unit under warranty. But it may take them a few days to get it in.

Gotta watch out for that myself then. Lately mine has been freezing up a little. I think it might be my thumb drive to tell you the truth, loading 650+ mp3's is hanging it up. But that's just a theory

GFN:

This happened to me a few times, and the dealer said he could not replicate the problem.

One time, when I started up my car at lunch time, the screen was blank.

Conveniently, where I work is not too far from the dealer. I showed it to them and got the screen replaced.

No problems since.

I had a post on this a little over a year ago:

As an update, I picked up my car this afternoon and the new nav unit is working perfecly. I don’t know why I thought different, but all my screen, stored routes, address book and music box settings are the same as before.

Make sure you remind them to update the nav software too. I had an issue and had my entire unit replaced. My old unit had 2012 maps on it but the new one came with 2009 maps. I didn't realize until I was leaving. Dealer updated the maps on their dime for me. Just be sure to check.

I checked that when I picked up the car. It’s the 10-11 verison that I had beforehand, so I accepted that.
