2008 Nav
2008 Nav
Is there anyway to upgrade the nav to the new software that came with the 2010 model. I don't mean maps I mean features like lane guidance.
I really hate the nav. After owning the car almost a year I still just use my 3 year old garmin.

You may want to view my recent post in another thread before you decide:
Perhaps you’re forgetting a few important aspects. With OEM nav you don’t have the inherent disadvantages of :
• A portable “stick on” device that looks like clutter on the dash.
• Having to remove it every time you park in a public area lest your car be broken into and the device stolen.
• Loss of integrated functions that come with factory nav like fuel economy, graphs, warnings for oil/filter changes due, etc.
• Having to install your own backup camera including wiring on older G37 models.
This is why, in the long run, factory navigation is preferred on our upscale cars rather than going the cheaper route.

I have the nav, so I have all those features. I just don't like it. It isn't easy to use and doesn't have the features of my garmin.
I might try the apps. They are a lot cheaper then a full device. I just don't know why on a 50K car it doesn't come with a better nav. It looks like they made major improvements in the 2010.
Oh well, if the remodeled 2014 is really nice I probably will be trading in my car anyway.

Yes, as newer Infiniti models are introduced, there will always be improvements. The nav I used to have in my 2004 G35 coupe was primitive compared to my current 2008. And as you say, in 2010 they made the Infiniti nav even better. I guess it’s just part of buying a newer car every now and then to keep up.
Having said that, it’s my sense that portable devices like the Garmin, as much as they improve their devices each year to keep pace with factory nav improvements, in the long run will fail due to the inherent disadvantages as discussed before. Suction cups on a windshield, friction mounts, device cradles or other odd device holders are no substitute for a system integrated into a clean looking dash.

I hate how every single car out there has a garmin or tomtom hanging on their windshield...even when they're in a town that they live in. I mean really...do you need that thing on if you know where the grocery store is??
The problem is that the handheld ones are years ahead of the built in ones. I bought my garmin in 2008, but I bought a 2007 model. I have more features on that then the 2010 model in the G37. I had a 2010 as a loaner, so I know what it has. Also the new garmin have lifetime free traffic and map updates. The car costs $200 a year to update, and the updates seem to be out of date.
The 1 advantage of the car one is it finds the satellite instantly even in a parking structure. The car one might take 2-3 mins and usually can't find it at all until you leave the parking structure.

SwissCheeseHead, that is why I don't mount my garmin. 90% of the time I just have it in the passenger seat. Sometimes I will grab it, when I need the lane assist. I don't think it is less safe then looking down at the car nav. 90% of what I use my GPS for is to find a place to eat. I have a job where I change jobs often. Sometimes 2-3 times in a year. I use the GPS to find places to get lunch at. That is why I hate the car one so much. Even after paying to update it, the nearby locations are badly out of date. It also has a lot less features.
I think the reason a car nav is so bad is I'm not going to factor in the nav when I pick a car. I'm really happy with this car and even plan to buy a new one after the remodel. Assuming I like it.
