Radar Detector Questions

Hey guys,

I always wanted to get one of these for my car and avoid some tickets but never had the guts or the appropriate info regarding it.

How harsh is the penalty if they catch you with one?

Is it difficult to install?

Where to get one?

Do they work properly?

Any of you that had experience with the gadgets, please provide some info.

Thanks

Different states in the US have varying laws/penalties for radar detectors. There are 100% legal for residents in Florida to have.

As for purchasing one, I have a Valentine (which I swear by) but have also heard very good things about the Escort detectors. I have mine hardwired into my mirror and it took about 5 minutes to install.

You need to specifically check out the laws for where you live in Canada and figure out whether or not it is really worth it. As for reviews on different radar detectors, use the Search function on here (there are already a TON of threads on this topic) and there is also a plethora of information available through a google search.

Last I checked, they are not illegal in Ontario (only legal in BC, AB and SK). I believe some cities even have radar detector 'detectors' so you might want to look into an STI with its stealth mode.

I'd buy a stealthcord after and hide it somewhat behind the rear view mirror so cops won't see you with it. If they do catch you with one, i believe they confiscate it and fine you $250... I think.... can't remember for sure.

Hope this helps

These days, Beltronics = Escort, Escort = Beltronics

Best way to discuss them: Belscort. Regardless of which brand it's under, pick the one you like the features of and buy it. They're both under the same roof.

As far as pick... I've had Beltronics since ~1999... Had the STI Driver since it debuted. Putting the STiR Plus (custom install like the 9500ci) and ZR4 shifters on the G this spring/summer. I've owned the Valentine, but aside from the nifty directional notification nothing stood out to me.

THAT SAID... Having a detector != no tickets. Plenty of people buy a detector, go gassing it around, get a ticket and then bitch that XYZ Brand sucks, it's the detectors fault, etc. If you get caught with one, they cannot punish you for it (unless in VA/DC here in the US, don't know about Canada)... but it's an almost GUARANTEED ticket. No warning. Straight to the citation.

It's a cat and mouse game where you have to use your head, some common sense and a bit of strategy.

Totally legal in Texas too. Valentine 1 is the best in my opinion.

Radar detectors in the US are only illegal in Virginia and Oregon. The more expensive radar detectors might pick up laser at the last second. It is easier to find police using laser because they usually also use their jammer which you can pick up at further distances. Regular radar with my Valentine 1 I can pick up a cop from a mile away. Also, your detector will pick up every ****ing Audi with the intelligent cruise control so be prepared for that.

I dont know what radar detector to recommend but from experience I can tell you that here in Ontario, most of the time they will just confiscate it. I've never heard of anyone getting a fine for having one, but they sure as hell dont like you having one lol.

Only illegal in VA and DC. 9500ix or Passport IQ (9500 with GPS) are the best out. They are "smart detectors" that learn false alarms. Pass a suspected trigger three times, and if its stationary and same GPS coordinates, 9500 "learns" i must be a non-threat and stores the location so next time it doesnt alarm. It does this automatically. Mine saved me two tickets in as many days. It pretty much paid for itself this week!!

I have the ValentineOne and love it, it's helped me out alot except for laser. I've gotten tickets from lasers cause once they click that button, they get a reading instantly and you can't really slow down. I've been looking into Laser Jammers from Laser Interceptor (I believe thats the company's name). A friend of mine has them and says they have helped him alot. He uses the Jammers for laser and the Valentine for the different Bands.
