Need help from the sound system gurus!
Hi all, I'm looking at the JL 10W3 sub to put in my car. I've searched here but didn't find anything. There is the 2 and 4 ohm versions. Both have same RMS power, pretty much the same price. Other than the difference in the ohms, is there a difference in their performance, sound or how they are made?? Im trying to figure out what amp to match with it. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thanks.
Is one a single voice coil and the other a dual?
I dont have experience with that exact sub, but usually when they are made in 2 and 4 ohm versions its to match up with an amp, so you can do things like running 1 ohm mono to squeeze every bit of power out of your amp (assuming the amp is built for such performance).

2 ohms is louder and 4 ohms is better quality, more amps push out more
Power to 2 ohms than 4. I got a Fosgate p3 2 ohm sub and it sounds good to me. Note when you buy the amp make sure you read how many watts it pushed to the ohm of your woofer. And supposedly 2 ohm blow out quicker than 4 ohm

JL audio does make JLW3v3 in both Dual 4ohm and Dual 2ohm as far as difference between the two... They are exactly the same sub, the only difference is the ohm rating. Not all amps handle the same but here is an example of what I had in the past.
Crossfire BMF1000d
1000watts @ 1 ohm stable
500watts @ 2 ohm stable
250watts @ 4 ohm stable
Had two 10W3v3 D4 wired in parrallel to get the subs down to 1 ohm resistance. Matched together with the BMF1000d given the subs 500watts each consistant. (which is over the recommended)
Now if you take Dual 2 ohm subs and wire to the amp. You could give 1 sub 1000watts @ 1 ohm (which will blow the sub) or if you get two Dual 2 ohm subs wire them series- parallel you could give the subs 250watts each at 2 ohm stable.
Dual 4 ohm sub could get you 8 ohm or 2 ohm
Dual 2 ohm sub could get you 4 ohm or 1 ohm
Hope this helps...
BTW I had a friend at one point ran 16 10" JLaudio 10w3 off of a Crossfire BMF1000d @ 1 ohm... you do the math
