Updating the Navigation maps

I have an 09 and my maps are already obsolete (in some areas).
How are they updated? Is it by the dealership?
Do they use a special DVD or plug in to the HDD?

And is there a charge?

Thanks for your input.

it is not DVD anymore. you buy the map then the dealer installes. As far as i know you cannot do it yourself like on the older dvd based systems.

You can get the navigation updates here: Navteq-InfinitiNorthAmerica-Site

For 2007-2009 models, you need to have the dealer install it. The dealer will charge $$ in addition to the $150 you pay Navteq to get the activation code.

Owners of 2010-11 models are supposed to be able to just update it by themselves. But they have not released any map update yet for those years.

it also just updates the maps and not the graphics or how the interface looks. so u wont get all the cool graphics that the newer cars have. kinda stupid.

You are correct. They no longer use a DVD that can be copied. There was an icident about 4 years ago with that. Someone bought the new Navi DVDs and made tons of copies and was selling them on ebay and G35driver for 40 bucks.

Now only the dealer can do the update. I just recently did mine in Feb (I got 1 free update from dealer with my purchase). The dealers dont even get to keep the updates. You have to purchase it upfront (or the dealer can purchase it and charge you), the company sends the update to the dealer, the dealer applies the update with a laptop, then the dealer has to mail the update disk back to the company.

You need to check ITB11-003: (see below for the text in this TSB)

NAVIGATION MAP DATA UPDATE MATRIX

APPLIED VEHICLES: 2003-2011 Infiniti vehicles equipped with Navigation system

SERVICE INFORMATION

Two methods are used to update/upgrade Navigation Map Data:

1. The customer is mailed update disc(s) and installs data.

OR

2. The dealership is mailed update disc(s) and the customer must visit the dealership to have data installed.

Use the matrix below to determine which method is utilized for each Applied Vehicle.
(I can't attached the matrix so I'll type it for G35/G37/G25 sedan)

2003-2006: DVD Customer is mailed update disc(s) and can install data; disc(s) left in drive. Refer to ITB05-050

2007-2009: HDD Dealership is mailed update disc(s); customer visits dealership to have data installed. Refer to ITB08-021.

2010-2011: HDD – DVD Customer is mailed update disc(s) and can install data; disc(s) not left in drive.

It's interesting how the 2009's and less have a 2011 map update available, but the 2010-2011 year model does not. A 2010 auto could have been bought in early '10 or even late '09, so wh can't they get the '11 maps, too?

2010 G37 vert map updates

Hello All,
I have 2010 G 37 vert. bought in Feb 2010. Been thinking about updating the maps. All I see is $150 and more. I'm pretty tech savvy, Is there a way to self update them by downloading them to a flash drive/disc and then plugging to the car?
Thanks guys!

What's the skinny on the 08-13 Gs with nav? Is that a dealer install or DVD from the supplier?

Just to add to this thread...if you want to save a little money and have the patience, Navteq usually discounts their prices from $150 to $99 a couple of times throughout the year, but normally a couple of months before the next year's edition comes out.

^^^I bought mine for $99 last year. No reason to update each year but every other makes sense to me.
