Navigation update?
Navigation update?
I think my 08 G37S comes with 08-09 map but if i update to the latest one 2010-11 what else will change other than the up to date maps? Will i get blueish background like 2010 navigation has instead of orange color blackground? Also any icons will change?
Thanks
Thanks
All that will change is you'll get the updated streets.
As I posted in another thread, I updated my maps last week to the 10-11 version for my ’08 coupe. Other than two minor changes everything looks the same, and all my personal settings, stored CD’s and voice commands (I have the extended list that came with my early ‘08) remain the same.
The only changes I noticed was that the generic gas station icon appears on the map display for all gas stations even though the name brand icon is also shown, a sort of redundancy; and when I select voice commands there’s an annoying extra phrase in the introduction that says, “or you may select help for a full list of voice commands” that I didn’t have before. Duh, as if I didn't know how to do that.

Thanks...is there anyway that i can upgrade my navigation to 2010 design software... blue gray background instead of orange / gray and all it's functions.
i think 2010 has a better resolution screen too..

NO, not any practical way. Meaning not without spending thousands fo dollars.
I got the update on a 2008 and in addition to adding 3 year old maps which never the less are an update, that's just the way it is with nav systems, my ipod interface changed in the way it scrolls. It use to scroll pretty slowly, now the screen goes blank when you hold it down and it scrolls much faster and then when you release it comes back. I prefer it actually, allows me to get to the end of my rather long playlist quickly, a nice improvement to what was for the most part a not to useful nav update.

Bumping an old thread but could be useful for some.
I had a talk with one of the service advisors at my dealership and basically you have to purchase the navigation update for $149 from navteq.com to get the code then $130 for the dealership to install.

what a rip (both sides)
yeah but our navigation is pita to find something.. maybe it's outdated?
I have to use my phone to google what i'm looking for...
for example .. if i'm looking for BestBuy i have to use my cell phone to search for the address first then .. input the address in the car nav.. if i search it using point of interest with my nav i'll never find it...
how about you guys?

I doubt any car based nav system will be as up to date as google maps. Whatever version my 2012 comes with is what will stay with the car for at least 3-4 years. Unless I move to an area that's undergone some major recent redevelopment, there's little reason to update.
I'm surprised you can't just buy a usb drive with the map data already installed, have the system copy it, then just punch in the unlock key through the touch screen.

If only they would make plain jane units where you can plug in your phone and interface with Google Maps. You'd always be up to date, and the dealerships wouldn't be ripping off the consumer on pointless nav updates that they claim will "save you gas." Too bad I'm living in a fairy tale world (unless an aftermarket solution for this comes out in the future, which I wouldn't be surprised with).
No I didn't update mine since I think its overpriced for both the isntall and the update itself. My iphone does a better job locating stuff.
I only use my nav for long trips anyways and $280 just for that isn't worth it.

Won't be updating mine. I bet in 5 years it still won't really make a difference.
FWIW, I almost never use Point of Interest within the car. I always just get the address of the place and put it in.
