Front Mounted Camera Surveillance

Just completed this new project. I attached a webcam to my carpc and mounted it on the rearview mirror. This allows the car to record from the driver's view whenever the car is on. I got this idea from a friend and decided that it'd be a good idea after a lady cut into my lane at 5 mph when I was driving at 40 mph. I was inches away from hitting her, yet she drove away like nothing had happened.

So there were 3 reasons for this project:

1. To serve as evidence in case of an accident
2. Record driving videos on mountain cruises and at the track
3. The cool factor

The video starts recording as soon as the car is turned on and the carpc starts. It normally records at a lower resolution (640x480) during driving. The program records video and sound and automatically compresses the video and audio. It will automatically delete the older videos to free room. Nothing is needed from the driver for the surveillance.

The camera I used is capable of recording at 720P. I plan to use the high resolutions to make driving videos.

The cord you see in the picture is actually for my Escort. The camera cable is routed along with the rearview mirror harness up through the ceiling.

You sir are the most creative and unique on this forum! Props to you for doing all these mods yourself!

I wanted this same feature so I just bought a car black box. It does the same thing but it saves to a memory card so I can't see what it is recording

if you use a playstation 2 webcam then it will much clearer. also are you using one-click webcamming recording? if so is it buggy? because im using the 2007 version of it and it has been buggy since.

I think my webcam is clearer than ps2 cameras. I'm recording at lower resolutions to conserve space. For surveillance purposes, there is no need for 720p. I'm using a program that records as soon a it loads. It's called capture

That's pretty cool. I actually have a device that does this specifically for capturing video of accidents. Haven't installed it yet though. I'll post pictures of it when I get a chance.

Awesome stuff man!

I know this has been said before but you should really start a blog or site where you can put down the nitty-gritty details of your setups.

I know that I would definitely be interested in following along (my OBD cable is on order already!).

Thanks for the support guys. I'm going back to school in August, so I'll have less time for mods.
