Efficient use of nav

I'm trying to use my nav and finding it almost impossible to use efficiently. Is there anyway to search for places by name without picking a category? And while moving? Say I want to find my nearest Target or Walmart how would you go about doing that? Or say its a store that I have no idea what the category is? It sucks you have to be stopped to set the destination easily.

you can't really search "by name" that I know of (other than by "nearby places" like you said)

but while moving the easiest way to get directions somewhere is just to input the address through voice commands, but that requires you to know the address of the place you want to go

You can input a destination by name search directly. Go to Destination -> Points of Interest -> By Name (top of the menu) -> input location ("Target" or "Denny's") -> List.

Unfortunately you can't do this while moving though, not in stock form anyway.

I wish when it listed the results they were in order of nearest to farthest automatically. I don't know what sense of order they come in. There's a Target store 5 miles from me and it's not automatically on the first page. The first one listed was somewhere in Arkansas over 200 miles away. WTF? There is a menu option at the top of the results page to select "By Distance" even though that's not he default for some reason.

Qwerty keyboard would be the next thing on my wish list. I know some models have it, but mine doesn't for some reason.

But yeah, searching by name sometimes is the best way to find something unless you're in an unfamiliar area and just looking for a nearby store or restaurant. Also, I usually hit the button to sort by distance (it's not the default) once it finds results.

As a last resort I sometimes have to break out the iPhone and find the address in google maps, then type it in, but I feel like the Infiniti GPS is failing me in these cases. I was unable to search for a nearby post office, for example. It wasn't in any of the categories, and when I tried a few things by name, like post office or USPS, etc, and did not get anywhere near the correct number of nearby results.

I'd pay money to see a good webinar on the Nav System. Someone could get rich.

Ask and you shall receive. Go to Settings - > Navigation -> Keyboard Input (option 12 of 16) -> QWERTY.

You're welcome.

Am I the only owner of a G37 who's read the manuals?

^ LOL on the webinar. Yeah. I just search on the G1 for the address then input it into the g's gps. Less frustrating and less of a headache that way.

g37 nav is pretty bad compared to the one i had in my subaru. i mean, what's the point of the icons and a touch screen if you cannot touch the icons and get the info on what's there? howcome you cannot make it show the 5 things YOU want it to show on the map (like all nissan or infiniti dealers, all starbucks coffee shos and all gas stations) it's really a bad nav system. i miss the one in my 08 STi. oh well, at least the car is a million times better, but i wish i knew why it was so hard to make a decent nav system

Some features I like (dual screen view for example), but if they had some tomtom nav type integration I think it would be a winner especially for the POIs.

Thanks! No, I have the PDF copies of the manuals and even the service manual which I've read through quite a bit, actually -- didn't find the word QWERTY in the owner's manual.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it wasn't an option but obviously I was mistaken because after you said that I opened the Nav manual, searched on QWERTY, and there it was! I keep forgetting there's a separate more detailed manual for that.

I know what you mean, with the little annoyances -- the stuff adds up. Sometimes it feels like using a software UI that was designed by a car company. Overall though, I'm still happy with it.
