IPOD not connected - Oh yes it is!
I'm using an iPod Classic 160gb 6th generation with my 2009 G37S. It plays and charges just fine, but there is an annoying issue that I would like some feedback on.
If I have the iPod connected and my playlist/tracks are playing just fine and I turn off the ignition to the car, wait 5 minutes, and then start the vehicle back up again, the music continues playing where it left off. Great! Nothing wrong here. However, if I turn off the ignition to the car and park the car and don't drive the vehicle for 3-4 days, and then come back and start the car up, the NAV console says "IPOD NOT CONNECTED"! And yet if I look down at my iPod, I can see the Infiniti logo and the "OK to disconnect" message on the iPod screen...just like I normally do.
The iPOD is clearly connected, for if I go to the NAV console and click INFO and go to any of the menu items (Playlists, songs, albums, etc.) I can see the music on the iPod.
So basically, if the vehicle sits for several days, the car thinks the iPod has been disconnected, when in fact it is connected.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks.

>> the iPod has to wake up
But it appears that it doesn't go to sleep until 48 hours have passed...which doesn't make sense. Why does the iPod go to sleep after 48 hours but not after 4 hours? I don't recall any "sleep" setting/timeout on my iPod.

Forgive me, but this still isn't making any sense. I thought the cable allowed the iPod to be recharged when connected, therefore, if so, how can the G37 be draining the iPod while at the same time charging the iPod?

There's a flaw in the system that doesn't allow your "compatible" ipod to turn off, so everything is fine as long as you're using the car very often. Eventually you'll wear down the ipod battery and the system will bring the ipod back online once it has enough juice to restart it. At that time, the system will switch from whatever source you have (radio, etc.) to ipod. Genius huh? They need a fix for this issue. Try this...turn your car off and see if your ipod powers down. It won't...it will revert back to the main menu with music, genre, etc., but will not shut off. That's what wears the battery down.
>> turn your car off and see if your ipod powers down. It won't
It doesn't...however, I just assumed the iPod eventually turned itself off automatically after a certain amount of inactivity. I've never sat around looking at the iPod screen after turning off the car.
So, let me get this straight... I take a 5 minute drive from home to my office, during which the iPod battery is being charged. I reach the office, turn off the car, leave the car for 9 hours, during which time my car is draining the iPod battery dry, and then drive home (5 minutes more of charge time) and leave the car in the garage until the next morning (another 14 hours of the G sucking my iPod's life blood).
Grand total:
10 minutes per day of charging the iPod
~23.5 hours of my G sucking battery life from my iPod
Do I have this straight?

I just performed a little test. I turned on my G37, let the stereo play a track from the iPod connection. Then I turned off the car. I then kept an eye on the iPod itself to see when the screen would blank out/turn off. It took about 5 minutes. OK, so, if the screen turns off and the iPod's hard drive isn't spinning, then where is the battery juice going that causes the iPod to discharge to the point where it has lost connection to the stereo a week later?
I replaced the battery on this iPod several months ago, so I don't have a weak iPod battery.

Mine does it too. Doesn't have anything to do with the battery draining. I don't know WTF you guys are talking about. I'll be listening to my ipod, run into my daughters day care to pick her up. I'm in there no more than 2 minutes. Come back out to the car and get this stupid error. No way the battery drains in less than 2 minutes. There is a glitch in the matrix. Doesn't do it all the time though!
>> you do know there is a quote button on this forum, right?
Yes, but these board's fancy quote systems often generate output that wastes screen space. ">>" is much more efficient for quoting a short phrase. But let's not get off topic.

The G doesn't drain the iPod battery. The iPod simply stays in a standby mode for quite a while before completely powering off. I'm sure that is what you are seeing.
Now that is not normal at all.

Here's what I found an Apple's web site regarding standby versus deep sleep mode. Note the reference to 36 hours, which isn't far off from my "2 day and lose connection" experience:
"If the iPod or iPod mini is left in sleep for about 36 hours, it will fall into deep sleep."
