iPod question

Never owned an Ipod before but thinking about purchasing one for the car. I was wondering is there a difference in car interface functionality between the iPod Nano vs Classic? Both would be the latests versions.

The newest generations of iPods/iPhones will not charge through the Infiniti iPod cable. You will need to get an adapter like the Scosche Passport or Griffin Charge Converter. Basically Apple changed from Firewire to USB charging, and the Infiniti iPod cable doesn't support the USB charging. With the adapter you'll be fine!

Not sure if you know this already, but take note that the in-car interface controls for the iPod are very basic, and searching for songs is very painful unless you divide them up into play lists (e.g. I set up a playlist for each artist so I can quickly find a song by artist).

Even that is useless since we already have the option to view by Artist. Instead I recommend playlists grouped into letters of the alphabet by the artists names. (i.e.: Playlist G would include Genesis and Godsmack; Playlist N would include Nine Inch Nails and Nickleback) They really needed to have added a search feature.

^^^ Hmm, that's right. I guess you're SOL if you have too many songs on your iPod. :P

Given what was said about charging I took a look at apple's refurbs but all they have is the new models so I guess I'll get the adapter.

One more question, does it turn off and on automtically when you turn off the car and turn it on or is that something that has to be done manually?

Hey MaxdOut,

The adapter is no big deal really. I have a 5th Gen (classic-like) and an iPod Touch. I use the touch in the car. I bought a kit from a company online:

http://www.hdaccessory.com/servlet/StoreFront

The media kit allows for movies on your screen! (with the parking brake applied) The ipod stays on, at least mine does. The power adapter 3 in one kit is like $10 and the media cable is $30. Make sure you click on the accessories section that correlates with the model of pod you get.

The best choice for an iPod in the G37 is the iPod Classic (either the new 7th gen 120GB, or the older 5th, 5.5 and 6th gen in their respective 30/60/80/160GB sizes). It's a huge amount of storage capacity and will charge properly without the need for an adapter.

Using a charging adapter like the Scosche makes it difficult to fit the larger iPods in the center console. My iPod touch with the adapter will only fit if I bend the OEM cable and nudge it in diagonally. The 4th gen Nano, 2nd gen Touch, and iPhone 3G/S all require an adapter for 5V USB charging (instead of the 12V Firewire charging in the G37).

So the Ipod Classic 120GB can charge without an adapter?

I was hoping to load all my mp3 on it and stick it in the center console and forget it, but if I need to turn it on and off all the time that would really blow.
