Video out with iphone 3g

So I bought one of these 3.5mm-to-A/V cables on amazon thinking that would allow me to display a video signal from my iphone 3g onto the nav screen, but I guess I was wrong. I just tried it out, and while the audio came through, the screen was black.

I was just trying to stream a youtube movie, since I don't have any actual videos stored on the phone. My question is, if I load a movie onto the phone through itunes, then then play it through the ipod function, would that play on the screen?

If not, would my solution be to buy the scosche adapter?

Sorry for all the noob questions as of late....

Here's the cable I used: http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-3-5-mm-...9472101&sr=8-1

Bah, that sucks.....I really don't feel like spending $50 on a cable I'll barely ever use.

I like my iPhone but thinks it's rediculous that they make this video **** so hard and that u have to use their cable. Actually there is another one on the market that's not apple but it is still pricey.

i went ahead and spent $50 on the cable from Apple. I use it daily, yes daily. i have a 35 minute commute each way to work and back. i can easily "watch" an episode of Family Guy or Seinfeld.

If you use it daily then the $50 dollar price tag is justifiable. I use my iphone for Pandora and the ipod, thats it. The AV cable would only be a "look what my car can do!" kind of accessory.

i'd say that will work. it's almost a spitting image of my Apple branded cable.

Are you running firmware 2.2? I found this cable too, but someone who posted a review said it stopped working with 2.1. I'm just afraid to get a cable that won't work.

$8.80
