Our NAVs SUCK!
Please don't get me wrong... Up until this point, the Nav has been perfect. I'm a supporter of the Nav and still happy I got it. It saves my *** all the time, but there are issues and I will admit that standard Nav's like Garmin and TomTom are just as good. Sure they aren't integrated and we have a few additional features, but in terms of what it does (providing Navigation) I do think the OEM Nav is sub-par to others on the market.
Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

One thing you can try is to put "Avoid area" markers on the roads that you don't want the navi to use. It will then find a different route that you might prefer.
I do this locally in Austin, TX because it always wants to use I-35. It thinks I-35 will be fastest since it is a major road and runs straight through town -- what it doesn't know is that I-35 is ALWAYS a parking lot. So, I placed avoid areas all down I-35. Now it chooses Loop-1 or backroads... always a better choice

And what would the right settings be to not make it take you the extra long route when you have "shortest route" or "shortest time" selected?
idk man errors suck..but i never really had any problems with it.."shortest time" and "shortest route" are two different things.."Shortest time" usually prefers highways over the local roads because you want to get there fast and highways are usually taken (what I noticed) if they are present and close enough. Also local roads are voided in this setting because lights and speed restrictions only if there is a highway present. AND "shortest route" is usually based on how far the destination is (in miles). This can be combination of both highways and local roads because nav wants to get you there with shortest distance possible...so it might take exit off the highway and get you back on the same highway again because it was a shorter distance on the local road instead on the highway (it does that)...Its weird man
