Help iPhone 3g / G37 ipod cable

iPhone 3g / G37 ipod cable
I am sure this has been covered somewhere here, but I can't find it at the moment. I am about to get a 3G iPhone, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the ipod cable that comes with our cars will not charge the iPhone. Is this true? If so is there an adapter or new cable available to fix the problem.
