Question Odd question for G37 Owners that are using the Escort 8500 X50 Radar Detector

Ok here's the situation - I have 2 Escort 8500 X50's, one is red and other blue and both bought from authorized dealers brand new. One in my 2000 Lex GS400 and one in my new G37. Now on the windshield mounted the radar performs normally. However when I unplug it and just wave it around in the front of the car while sitting in the driver seat, with the sensor pointing throughout the cockpit (windshield, stereo, gauge cluster, etc. the damn radar starts going crazy with LASER alerts.

I plugged in both x50's and tried this and it was doing it. I was parked in my neighbourhood in my garage - no cop threats in fact I have done it in 2 different neighbourhoods with both radars.

Oddly enough I think something in the cockpit of the G37 triggers a LASER response on the Escort which is kind of $hitty. Good news however is that while mounted on the windsheild in detector position it does not sound off LASER, just when I wave it around in the car.

This is not an urgent issue but just one more so of curiosity. Anyone that has a new 2008 G37 Coupe preferrable with Prem/Navi/Tech (in case its one of those components triggering it) please try this out. It does it with the engine off and on - whether the car battery has to be on I wouldn't be able to say since the Escort needs the power to be on anyway.

Let me know if this happens to anyone? THANKS GUYS!

I think your adaptive cruise is setting it off.

That would be my guess. That radar thing in the front grill is probably setting it off.

Mine does the same thing. I have not turned on the Adaptive Cruise control yet.

I have a BEL RX65 that went crazy with laser alerts on a trip back from Baltimore last weekend. I blamed it on the sun/glare coming through the windshield. It didn't happen on the drive to Baltimore, just on the way back west (sun setting).

Oh, and I don't have ACC. So that isn't it.

I also have the 8500 like you althought i have the zr3 laser shifter package also. I do not have the adapitive cruise control but that would have nothing to do with your system going off saying laser as the Cruise system uses radar not laser. So if anything you would be getting false k/ ka alerts not laser. I also have had a false laser go off while driving. but only once. Not sure what it is. For me its very odd since my 8500 does not pick up the laser the shifters on the front and back of the car are what pick up the laser in my system.

My V1 has done this since day 1 in the G. Thought it was the ICC, turned it off and it still did it. does it. I now believe it is the preview braking system. I think I am going to have to turn off laser detection in the V1.

BTW ICC and PBS use a LASER rangefinder, in the IR range.

GUYS... its the LCD screen setting it off. There was much discussion i think on G35driver forums or the radar forums. I'll hafta find it l8r. gotta get to bed for AutoX tomorrow.

but to the OP... its def ur LCD screen from the way it sounds. I'm thinking now that the thread i read was on the G driver forums in the 07 sedan section.

Let us know if u find it. I will check l8r. gotta run.

I found this via Google, re: the BEL RX65:

"We also found false laser alerts with no police anywhere nearby. The false laser alerts are caused by bright, repetitive reflections off the white painted road stripes at the center of the highway. It is also caused by bright reflections off the metal side rails along side the highway. This false noise does not occur very often and is caused by bright light reflections at a particular frequency."

Basically, bright reflections are the cause. Considering the location of my detector at the time (very high on the windshield, near my toll pass) and the position of the sun in the sky, that's plausible.

Re: the LCD display causing it... I haven't seen that thread, will have to try to find it. I've never heard of an LCD display causing that kind of problem. But then, odder things have happened.

I am thinking based on your guys' response it may be the LCD screen because if it was the sensor on the front bumper then it would still do it when I plug it on the windsheild - if anything do it more - however on the windshield there is no LASER alert problem it's just when I wave it around IN the car. Also I don't think the bright light theory applies to this case because I test it in my dark garage though that may trigger LASER alerts in other instances...Also I don't think it's the adaptive cruise either because that was switched off and I doubt its always emitting signals.

Anyways AhujaDaddy thanks for the input - Now I know I am not cursed with 2 faulty X50 radars. Luckily the damn thing is fine on the windshield.

I guess that does it for this thread - However if someone can provide a link to the Original Post that discussed this - that would be nice.

Thanks.

Yeah honestly must be the LCD screen I imagine like AhujaDaddy said. If anyone's is going off while mounted on the windshield then I would feel really bad 4 u. Yeah the 9500i basically has teh same detection as the 8500 x50 but it just does a hell of a better job at cancelling repeat false alerts by letting you mute that frequency at that exact spot via GPS.....Nice feature but I cant fork double dollar for that - $255 im spendin on my x50's at discount is steep enough!

I don't have a G37 yet, but I had problems with my V1 detectors (3) reacting with a laser alert almost every time I put my Garmin street pilot GPS on the dash. The V1's are all mounted near the rear view mirror. The lcd screen sounds like the most likely culprit!
(I grew tired of it and disabled the laser detection on the Valentines)

Ron
