To clean the rust off the cats, what was mostly on the flanges, I used a non acid remover, it takes time but is the safest thing I felt. I didn't want to get any muriatic anywhere near these, or clr, or coca cola. I started by standing them in like 1-1/2" of solution to cover the flange but not get any on the core.
