Spare Tire in G37xS Coup

Do anyone keep their spare tire in the trunk or do you guys remove it so that the trunk capacity can be increased?

I am asking because I have AAA and I really don't see the point of having a spare tire unless I am driving really long distances on a regular basis. What do you guys think?

Also, if you guys do remove the spare tire, what do you place at the bottom of the trunk floor to keep the bottom leveled? Are there any kits or DIY for this?

I have kept my spare tire solely because I don't want the cover to sag or break with weight on it. I have bigger aftermarket wheels and wouldn't be able to use it if I had to anyway lol.. You could easily make a MUCH lighter foam insert if you want to rid of it while still supporting the things in your trunk.

it is really up to you. imo, if help don't come or it will take them a while to get to me i'd rather start changing my wheel my own right away.

Bulky bubble wrap is a good choice to use as padding if you choose to remove the spare in the trunk.

this - i'd rather do it myself and be back on the road in 10min vs. waiting an hour or more for roadside assistance.

also, the spare tire is sometimes part of a car's structural crash protection, so there's that.

Thanks everyone.

I did not know spare tire was part of structural crash protection.

In that case, I guess I'll just leave it in.

I doubt that the spare tire is part of "structural crash protection." Many newer cars don't come equipped with a spare tire anymore. My coworker's Q50S didn't come with a spare, which is like a $250 option or something like that. He didn't find out about that after having owned his brand new car a few weeks. Needless to say, he wasn't happy.

i said the spare tire is "sometimes part of a car's structural crash protection" - i have no idea if that's the case with the G37 or not.

Yeah, I got you the first time around. I actually didnt know spare tires played a part in safety for any of the cars. I rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks Landshark!

Meh, If you get rear ended hard enough to need the spare tire for protection, the car is already totaled..

Why would having aftermarket wheels make the spare useless?

Because you can't run 20" and then use a 19" spare.. Insanely unsafe. I have roadside and will just be late for work or whatever, no biggie. Plus, the spare tire being used as structural protection is a joke, its a tiny steel wheel and a tiny worthless tire. You've got bigger problems if the rear end is hit hard enough to hope the spare helps..

Ugh spares are meant to be used very temporarily. And changed back out the first chance u get. U don't go on with ur life with a spare on. U do kno the spare is 18" and the stock sport wheels is 19". The size difference doesn't make a spare useless even at 20" imo. The only issue is the ground clearances which the manual already points out as a precaution. So u can use ur spare jus be cautious how u drive with it on and go no more than 50mph (says so in the manual) and u should be fine.

Cool story bro, I have no doubt the car can make it to a shop without hurting anything but, I'm not putting a donut on mine. Do as you please with your car.
